A recent Duke grad probably thought she was sending something funny to close friends, now millions know the intimate details of her sex life.

Major national media organizations like NBC and the New York Times have descended on the Duke campus since Karen Owen's bogus senior honors thesis was posted by the websites Deadspin.com and Jezebel.com.

The topic has become one of the hottest search topics on the Internet - generating millions of page views for the sites that posted the document.

According to published reports, Owen e-mailed the PowerPoint file entitled "An education beyond the classroom: Excelling in the realm of horizontal academics" to a couple of close friends.

Someone in that group apparently forwarded it on to others, and before long the media got wind of it.

In the 42-slide PowerPoint, Owen describes - and ranks - the sexual performance of 13 current and former Duke students who are all varsity athletes.

This, to me, is one of the rare cases where the person can't be blamed. This isn't a Facebook issue, an online privacy issue, or any of the sort. This is simply, excuse my language a ~ Snipped as per TOS ~ forwarding something they had no right to forward to anyone that wasn't on the "To" line. We can go back and forth about whether she should have made such an email to begin with, and even I admit it wasn't the brightest idea in the world. But, the fact remains that her life is about to get really screwed up because of one person doing what they had no business doing, not because of the loss of online privacy or the idiocy that is social networking.

One thing's for sure, she likely just made 13 new enemies.

Hopefully as it's all over the www now, plenty of people "might" start to get more clued up on the do's/don'ts of keeping private things, Private. Having said that, they probably think it can't/won't ever happen to them. And strangely enough, some of them won't care Except when it all comes back to haunt them in the future, which it often does these days

The sad thing is, people don't always have to learn from their own mistakes, they can learn from others, but for some reason they don't

I joke about this, but really I wouldn't be happy if I were any of those dudes (even the ones who were "satisfactory" to her). My private business is my business and I don't want it all over the web. But I guess that's the age we live in. If it's in writing, it will probably end up on the web and, as we all know, will be out there forever.

That said it also shows how desperate folks are for junk news. News organization shouldn't even bother with stuff like this. Sad.

This is perfect ammunition for media outlets, advocacy groups and politicians. This will get turned into a big privacy on the net story when it has nothing to do with it. But, you're right, even though I gave her less of the blame in my original post, I wonder just how much more attention this would get if she had been the one who got talked about. Hell, in this country, Oprah would have gotten a hold of it and had her on the show as the poor little sexually harassed victim. Given Dukes' history, I'm almost assured these 13 men are going to be the ones to who people say "you should be ashamed".

That is the most-important lesson here. And there's another -- "Anything recorded can become public." I'm really glad that there weren't cell phones with cameras when I was in college! There are some news articles, but they're probably not digitized

Don't be 100% sure, some libraries around here have digitized full newspapers from a few years ago all the way back to some of the very first papers printed in the state, and, they are accessible online to anyone with a valid library card. All I'd have to do (albeit while also breaking the TOS) is print them out and re-upload them to wherever I want and boom, like that they're on the web for all.
