I am very suspicious of the fact that Phantom Armor's website and change history looks IDENTICAL to Shadow Defender's.

Looks like someone ripped off Shadow Defender's website.
I am not sure about the software...
Would it be possible to build a GUI wrapper around Shadow Defender?

    Anyway, something smells fishy...

I also noticed the similarity ! The application itself seems to lack the SD settings but I only made a quick install (under SD of course !).

Well I gave it a whirl in a VM and if it is a clone of SD then they've left out a quite few nuts and bolts and all I will say is don't install this el crapola on the real system.

Have you tried Shadow Defender in the same virtual environment or similar?

Do you have enough experience with Shadow Defender to be certain this is not a rebranded product?

Please excuse me questioning your expertise, however, I have read a lot of good things about Shadow Defender and if this were a re-branded Shadow Defender then it would be a very good thing. I don't want to give up on it unless I'm pretty sure of the validity of your judgement.

Yes I have tried SD in an XP VM and it's great product as is Returnil.

This phantom thingo looks nothing like it and when I tried to change a setting through the gui a "do you want uninstall" box came up?

Just tried it briefly and I won't bother again.

If you have a VM then give it a run but I really wouldn't install to the real system unless you're game and have a decent imaging app.

This free addition offers no free updates. My SD isn't updating either. So I see no advantage to using it.

IDK but even the webpage looks identical. I intially thought maybe this was a SD re-make from a fanboy, considering SD suffered from brain death :'( but it turns out that the last update was made exactly on the same date as SD's last update. eitherway the price is just not worth it...

Interested if this is, as it looks, plain plagiarism or whether someone has been authorised to take forward the Shadow Defender project due to Tony's inability/unwillingness to do so.

You would have thought though that given the excellent reputation SD has they would want to highlight rather than hide that.

It has been suggested Tony's absence could be related to his project being frowned upon by the authorities. Could he be starting up under a new guise?

Anyway, just speculation, and as noted more likely this is opportunism - the developer is gone so lets nick his code.

I won't be using this. I'll stick to the original until it's proved it don't work or is regularly bypassed. Both appear to be a long way off thankfully.

    Cheers

This one is for x32 only.

Whereas, Shadow Defender is for both x32 and x64.

Steer clear of this. The domain is registered by PrivacyProtect.org ,i.e. anonymously. Whoever this website and software 'belongs' to, they don't want anyone to find out who they are. Cavaet emptor!

To go along with the speculation, over at GAOTD, one of the comments says that someone from SD left and was up in a tizzy and this may be them getting back at the company.

ps. no need to test it further....

Errr..Shadowdefender is/was a 1-man business - Tony. He's MIA. Either he's sold the business on to this anonymous company, licensed the software to them (despite being MIA) or they have stolen it/cracked it and are reselling it on the basis that the original author has disappeared and is not going to complain.
