Virus Check Files Online Without Downloading Them

For some reason every time I try to scan a file ready for download I only get the url scanned.

 

This is interesting. I wonder if VirusTotal is making a profit out of this. Many vendors give VT private builds of their scanners. Now if they have started to monetize other people's work, companies could start pulling the plug on VT.

 

so with addon, does it first download file and then upload to virus toal servers , check ??

has anyone tried the addon

 

I've tried the Firefox addon and it seems to download the file to the Virus Total servers and scan it. Of course you have to wait in a queue but what do you want for free?

but we can do that uploading to VT .. i thought may be previously analyzed files would be detected without need of uploading somehow

 

This includes Microsoft's SmartScreen filter . Thus, it seems that even if a given file is bigger than 20 MB, you can still get SmartScreen's judgment about the file.
