Wifi works just fine. Like I said this happened after a recent update. I am using a Linksys WMP600N pci card @ 5ghz. I really shouldn't complain but it's my only eyesore. I google'd and couldn't find anything recent nor relevant. The icon does show it connecting then I get the !.

I don't know why, but you could try wicd - it's in the repositories.
http://wicd.sourceforge.net/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicd_(L...etwork_Manager) It will uninstall NM as far as I know.

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that I did try WICD which is fine but from boot to desktop I find myself waiting way to long for wicd to connect to my network. Not sure if it's because i'm running a 5ghz network. I did reinstall NM and removed any config file in /~home but still same issue. I do like wicd but me sitting waiting 20-30 seconds looking at my desktop for a connection sux.

I see. Have you tried anything here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7605785 Maybe scroll down about half way to:- TIP: faster connection time
For better performance in establishing a connection, get the latest stable version (read step 1.a) and select ioctl backend under Preferences > Advanced Settings. (wicd).
