Default D-Day coming for Internet service providers (IPv6)

Quote:
By Brad Reed | Network World

John Curran has a message for Internet service providers: Don't expect to be bailed out if you haven't already started the upgrade to IPv6.

Curran, the chairman of the board of trustees at the American Registry for Internet Numbers, told an audience at this week's FutureNet conference that the next 18 months will represent a "Judgment Day" for ISPs that still think they can get by through improving the efficiency of their IPv4 address use. The bottom line, Curran said, is that there simply won't be anymore IPv4 addresses in a year and a half.

Out of curiosity, I just talked to one of the experts at my local ISP about this, and he says that at the provider's end, any problems will probably first show up in reduced availability of dynamic IPs as more customers sign up. There seems to be general agreement that the crunch is still a couple of years down the road, and there's even some speculation that there's at least some media hype in the current crop of reports, much like the Y2K "crisis" back when.

We've been hearing this type of "DANGER!!! We'll run out of IPv4 addresses in two years! End of internet coming!" type of claims for at least 15 years now. Periodically, every about two years. So, I'm sorta tired of this agenda.
