She installed the windows update by clicking on the yellow shield on the tray and it said "Installing" but few mins later, it disappeared and it didn't give her a notice saying "Complete" or anything like that. Should she be worried?

Your friends seem to have alot of computer problems. Perhaps you should direct them here to start learning things and or show/explain to them the importance of imaging. Even if they're stored on just another partition, can save a world of headaches.

    Lots of freebies!

Yes. I still use XP. Do you think the update got installed since it didn't say any errors during the installation?

A long time ago we clicked on do not install SP3 and we just heard that next month SP2 would stop being supported by Microsoft. How do we unblock the SP3 update again?

cheater87, visit the Windows Update site. When the page loads, click on the Custom button, then, look for the Restore Hidden Updates link on the left hand sidebar. Click it and that should take you where the SP3 update has been residing.

Perhaps this Microsoft Update - Usage Overview pictorial might help you understand the above procedure.

Soofly is worried about the update shield not appearing after SP3 is installed. I told her it would still appear but she just wants to ask you guys to be sure.

cheater87, while there are no guarantees in life, the odds are very good that the yellow update shield will appear after any Service Pack installation, however, if sooflymami is looking 100% flawlessness, I don't believe anyone can promise that.

If the shield does not appear during Patch Tuesdays, after the SP3 installation, all she has to do is post here. I'm sure any Wilders member will give her directions.

would it be safe to install sp3 now since I already run a scan and cleaned on Avast? Avast should be enough in order to get and use sp3? and also, is doing scanning under boot scan mode required before installing?

Can someone give us step by step instructions on how to install SP3 for XP? So we know what to click on. I upgraded my family's computers a while back and I'm helping Soofly with it but forget what it says.

After clicking on Restore Hidden Updates-clicking on SP3 update, will you give me the step by step instructions so I'll know what to do and will know what to click on? I'm new at doing this. and is system restore required before installing sp3 or no?

sooflymami, because I'm no longer running Windows XP and never updated to SP3, it would be difficult to help you personally should trouble occur, however, do read this comprehensive Microsoft article: Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 prior to updating.

Perhaps other Wilders members, who have installed SP3, will soon reply to this thread with their comments.

Creating automated system recovery (ASR) is highly recommended.. ASR is useful solution for system recovery if Safe Mode Boot & Last Known Good options are useless..

I clicked "Restore Hidden Updates" but it seems like it did not unblock it..I did get a message saying "there are no hidden updates" after clicking on "Restore them now". But when I go back to the page again, it still says I have hidden updates and I need to restore them even though I already clicked "Restore hidden updates." Do I just click "install updates" Above where it says "Important-You have hidden updates" in the yellow box? even though it might not have unblocked it?
