There is a guide for Version 3.0 but not one for version 4.2. Should I use the guide for version 3.0 to setup version 4.2 or leave it at typical installation or?

That's basically the Typical installation, not explaining the custom setup as in Blackspear's thread. |

Can't do that because the choices are different. |

Other than the firewall in ESS, if I remember correctly, the settings are the same for both programs. Last edited by ronjor : April 22nd, 2010 at 08:18 PM. |

Installation video tutorials, user guides
You may also want to opt-out of Windows update notifications, this is user choice You would also need to configure your scanning targets and weekly scanner Be careful tweaking protocol filtering as this is causing a bit of grief for a few users

Additionally, please remember to "Enable detection of unwanted applications" during initial installation. |

One would enable potentially unwanted and potentially unsafe applications via this solution This is user choice as is non-default.

Many users here dont agree with Blackspear's suggest settings because they are too high and use too much advanced heuristic which slows the pc. Typical installation and default settings, with "Enable detection of unwanted applications", are very good and recommanded by Eset. |

That's what I ended up doing. Thanks for the feedback. |

I check advanced heuristics in both areas, set it to strict cleaning in all areas and dont check run time packers. No slow downs.

I have everything of default, except:
- in all ThreatSense settings I checked all the options, so including potentially unwanted programs and potentially unsafe programs; - disabled the splashscreen at startup. The rest is all on default since version 4.2 fixed all minor issues I had with 4.0. |

How do you disable the splash-screen on start-up? |

Sorry for beating the dead horse here but since we are talking about features and system usage i couldn't resist.
There will always be a security/system resource trade off. Waiting a few more seconds for a website to open? Or, pay a nice fat computer repair bill? I love this quote: "Just because you are wearing a bullet proof vest doesn't mean you should walk in front of the line of fire." or something like that... |

Is it recommended to disable checking run time packers? Did you see significant slow downs with it enabled?

Default settings work well, build on those and learn what works best for you, what someone else uses in their environment isn't necessarily a tweak you would want.
