Post No Updates March 27 | 2010

Is the update server having problems ? I have been asked by a number of folks as to why there is no updates as of yet today. This is unusual for ESET.

There have been updates available twice every Saturday this month and others prior to that using March as an example for the naysayers out there here, here, here, here, here, here,

Greetz,

I wasn't pointing to the update list itself I was showing JoeBlack40 how ESET's ThreatSense® engine is always on the lookout and if needed an update would be issued!

Are you all really sad enough to sit and watch for updates? Seems a bit over the top surely?

If I see the "downloaded new updates" message then great. But I don't lose sleep unless it's several days between updates and Windows starts to notify me.

Surely, surely no-one here is keeping tabs on when the updates are (or are not) released. Nothing better to do?

Just my 2p.....

While no one likes sitting around watching paint dry, Jim, it was a concern as noted
Quote:
An out of date virus scanner is only marginally better than no virus scanner at all
Virus scanners work by comparing the data on your computer against a collection of virus "signatures". Each signature is characteristic of a particular virus, and when the scanner finds data in a file, email, or elsewhere that matches the signature, it concludes that it's found a virus. However, a virus scanner can only scan for the viruses it knows about. It's vital that you keep your virus scanner's signature file up to date, as new viruses are created every day.

The problem actually goes a bit deeper than this, though. Typically, a new virus will do the greatest amount of damage during the early stages of its life, precisely because few people will be able to detect it. Once word gets around that a new virus is on the loose and people update their virus signatures, the spread of the virus falls off drastically. The key is to get ahead of the curve, and have updated signature files on your computer before the virus hits.

Virtually every maker of anti-virus software provides a way to get free updated signature files from their website. In fact, many have "push" services, in which they'll send notification every time a new signature file is released. Use these services. Also, keep the virus scanner itself—that is, the scanning software—updated as well. Virus writers periodically develop new techniques that require that the scanners change how they do their work.

one of the reasons I drifted away from Nod towards other products was that there never seemed to be any updates at weekends, this was a few years back now:-I hope same type of thing isn't going to become the "norm" again as the malware writers don't seem to take weekends off, hopefully it is just a problem this time

that is partly true, but depending on how effective its heuristics and if any hips are employed an out of date av product can still be quite/very effective

NOD32 updates signatures 2-4 times per day, and has not had a day go by without an update this year until now.

To go over 40 hours without an update is in my experience unprecedented, and worth questioning, for the reasons siljaline noted.

I don't think so we got 2 updates today so what is the big deal? They give us updates when it is necessary IMHO! And if you look at the two updates today there reasonably small 4979 & 4980

A long time without updates
Heuristics are still based on signatures!! You still need them for good heuristics!

No big deal at all! I was only pointing out that it was highly unusual for ESET to go this long without updates, and that to question it is not unreasonable.

I have been using NOD32 for over 7 years and I'm just saying it's not unusual for me IMO it's just been quite awhile where I have a day gone by and no update and it's no big deal to me!

Cheers,

TH

EDIT: The last time we didn't have a daily update was in Update 4098 (20090522) and the next was 3 days later Update 4099 (20090525)

the heuristic module does get updated but it doesn't rely on signature updates as such:-its actually there to try and catch stuff there are no signatures for

I agree. Long time NOD32 user and I've seen the updates become more frequent over the years, presumably because of the increase in the amount of malware being released and ESET expanding.

As has been pointed out, daily signature updates are a regular thing. ESET are very good at keeping on top of new threats and i've seen times when they'll release an update or 1 or 2 signatures when a new outbreak takes place, so if there had been something big and bad this weekend you can rest assured they would have released an update.

I'm glad that I could help somewhat in my explanations. The OP made it a big deal for one day without updates! And that's why I said it's no big deal ESET has us covered!

And thanks to rothko who agrees also!
