Well, this is an interesting thread. Sort of a nice diversion from the super serious stuff that is always on here. From my memory (which could be corrupted by malware!), I can add this info. I won't swear to it, however, and I ain't going to look it up.

1. Avast is a somewhat old fashioned, pirate-talk way of saying "stop."

2. F-Prot is from FRISK software. I don't know if FRISK is an acronym.

3. I think NOD is an acronym for Czech words meaning "hospital on the edge of the disk". I think this is play on words from a Czech soap opera. If my Czech from Army days still serves me, the letters come from the words Nemocnice na Okraji Disku.

4. I suppose Norton comes from Peter Norton, the dude that started the Norton line of utilities back in the good old days.

What about McAfee? That has to be named after somebody. It is not a very intimidating name, however. I think Viper probably wins the award for cool name. Panda must be the least intimidating.

I think Comodo and Bullguard win the "badass" battle until someone comes out with "John Wayne" AV.

If we are looking for "badass", Komodo would be better than Comodo.

NOD32 should also create NOD64 to have an updated name, but that might confuse customers.

Need to add Symantec to this one, though I don't have any idea what it means or what it should mean, so you guys go ahead.

I vote this thread for a sticky!

Actually ... Nemesis is not a fictional AV tool. Back in the good old DOS days there was a behavior based utility called Nemesis. Essentially it was a TSR that monitored certain attack vectors on DOS systems. Kind of like HIPS or Behavior Blockers today.
