Decided to bite the bullet and downloaded the trial.
Uninstalled the original (goodbye old friend). Installed the trial and answered "Yes" to create a rescue area. Seemed to go OK until this point: 03/17/2010 09:29:15.772 Adding "Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.Data.Entity.Build.Tasks.dll" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:15.803 Adding "Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.Data.Entity.targets" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:15.819 Adding "Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.VisualBasic.targets" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:15.834 Adding "Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.VisualC.STLCLR.dll" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:15.866 Adding "Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.WinFx.targets" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:15.928 Error - DCF::BackupRead: The system cannot find the file specified. 03/17/2010 09:29:15.928 Windows error: 2 03/17/2010 09:29:15.928 Error - Adding "Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.WinFx.targets" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:15.928 Creating folder "Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\MSBuild" in Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:15.944 Adding "Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\MSBuild\Microsoft.Build.Commontypes.xsd" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:15.944 Error - GRH::CreateFile: The system cannot find the file specified. 03/17/2010 09:29:15.944 Windows error: 2 03/17/2010 09:29:15.944 Error - Adding "Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\MSBuild\Microsoft.Build.Commontypes.xsd" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:15.944 Adding "Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\MSBuild\Microsoft.Build.Core.xsd" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:15.944 Error - GRH::CreateFile: The system cannot find the file specified. 03/17/2010 09:29:15.944 Windows error: 2 which changed to: 03/17/2010 09:29:20.546 Error - GRH::CreateFile: The system cannot find the file specified. 03/17/2010 09:29:20.546 Windows error: 2 03/17/2010 09:29:20.546 Error - Adding "Windows\System32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.1.7600.16385.cat" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:20.546 Adding "Windows\System32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\Microsoft-Windows-Help-CoreClientUAPS-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~en-US~6.1.7600.16385.cat" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:20.546 Error - GRH::CreateFile: The system cannot find the path specified. 03/17/2010 09:29:20.546 Windows error: 3 03/17/2010 09:29:20.546 Error - Adding "Windows\System32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\Microsoft-Windows-Help-CoreClientUAPS-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~en-US~6.1.7600.16385.cat" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:20.546 Adding "Windows\System32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\Microsoft-Windows-Help-CoreClientUAPS-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.1.7600.16385.cat" to Rescue Area 03/17/2010 09:29:20.546 Error - GRH::CreateFile: The system cannot find the path specified. 03/17/2010 09:29:20.546 Windows error: 3 and ended with: 03/17/2010 09:31:00.058 Error - GetCompressedFileSize: The system cannot find the file specified. 03/17/2010 09:31:00.058 Windows error: 2 03/17/2010 09:31:05.721 Copied 9.02 GB (38358 files, 15096 dirs); Errors 106300; 00:37:52.123 Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit.

Greetings Steve,
"Error - DCF::BackupRead: The system cannot find the file specified" This means that we are unable to FULLY read the source file from the disk. Please run CHKDSK on your C: drive. Please PM me with the results.

CHKDSK ran clean, however this was in the event log at the exact time of the first error:
The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because the shadow copy storage could not grow due to a user imposed limit. I don't remember setting a limit I've since done several updates and everything is fine

Greetings Steve,
Interesting and great find. I can use that system log message in our logs to now to better address this if it comes up again!
