If you will use what it has to offer then yes worth the upgrade. If not then your basically trading one router out for another, So all in all it depends.

Thanks fajo, Yes he will also give me a tutorial and set up everything as he thinks needed. He is in the computer business and a whole lot more knowlegable than me, so the info gained might be worth the $ itself.

Have an look here at this HTML Demo of the Check Point Z100G Secure Wireless Router by ZoneAlarm to gain an idea of what you are getting into.

This Router is very technical and on an professional level for Home Use, in other words Enterprise Level Security condensed down to Consumer Level:

Good Luck, it is well worth the time and effort to learn.....

WOW, thanks HKEY. I'll probably buy it but it sure looks like it's well above my skill set. I guess i'll take his word for it that he can set it up for me. He told me it's pretty simple once you get it setup. He might have forgot that he's a Ohio State computer grad and i'm a concrete worker though. LOL

Don't know how they perform but on first look for $70 (excuse the expression) I'd take his hand off.

I use something similar, looking at the features it has everything mine has and for new a much better price. I'm a fan of putting the protection at the gateway and that's what you have here - it you want it, go for it:thumb:

Depending on where you live you can get routers for $29 bucks or even lower but these routers lack heat protection thus the trade off would be short live ownership. Heck right now you can get Dual Band N, Gig Ports for $59 off Newegg and that's Standard N Wireless Router from Trendnet only until 11/23.

As for range, that will vary where your operating environment usage it going to be. Older homes will not be like one of those new drywall homes where the signal is ideal. Still G or N wireless or just go with a wired router? Build one or not? To many factors, cost and how much electric to run home build one 24/7 or just get one of those plastic tiny routers for $59 bucks and call it a day!

Emulator for the $59 Trendnet click on the link below
    http://www.trendnet.com/emulators/TEW-672GR_v1.0R/adm/status.html

    NAT Firewall
3K configurable NAT entries; restricted NAPT
IP ranges, port ranges and schedule
    Pre-defined game hosting configurations
Port triggering for 24 special applications
ALG support (enable/disable support) –RTP/RTSP, AOL, FTP, ICMP, WMP/MMS, NetMeeting, SIP

    SPI Firewall
Up to 24 rules; cyber attack protection – verified against over 2000 attacks

    So what is your point?

To cause confusion, or to display artificial intelligence?

This Thread is about the Z100G, do you have ANY useful information about the Z100G?

For rocky6 this is an exciting and new adventure, any positive information will be encouragement toward success.

Honestly if you are in the market for a router I would go with a common linksys router. Not to say that the ZA one is bad but, if you need trouble shooting/configuration help, it may be hard to find info on it on the Googles.

Linksys is alot less configurable then the one he is getting. Even the one I have is baseline until you flash it with 3rd party firmware.

well i suggest you to make your own router with opensource

    you can use

    untangle
    endian firewall
    pfsence
    clearos
    smoothwall
    ipcop

....................lot of other opensourse distros they are easy to configure i like endian pfsence very much

i sugest you to buy old pc or new pc of intel pentium 4 or intel core due alteast 2gz with 2 gb ram and built your own router with any of above mention opensource i personally prefer endian 2.3 utm/router easy to install and great utm distro enterprise class level built on redhat/centos linux
    http://www.endian.com/en/community/overview/

    http://www.endian.com/en/community/feature-comparison/

another great distro is untangle you can also try untangle for windows

    untangle.com

    http://www.untangle.com/Re-router-Technology

i suggest you to wait little for clearos 5 with is still in beta mode...........great distro

if you looking for only pure router distro you can try pfsense i pure enterprise class level open source router built on bsd it can be run from 256 ram and old p3 pc

The Check Point ZoneAlarm Secure Wireless Router Z100G is unparalleled in comparison to standard Consumer Routers or Home Manufactured Frankenstein's.
What sets the Check Point ZoneAlarm Secure Wireless Router Z100G apart from standard Consumer Routers is that the Z100G exists Application-Awareness and True Stateful Inspection.

Firewalls that do not exist Application-Awareness MUST open up an RANGE of Ports for certain applications, which leads to exploitable holes in the firewall and violates security “best practices”.

Firewalls that do not exist True Stateful Inspection CAN NOT examine information in all seven layers of the Packet, and CAN NOT keep track of the state derived from previous communications or

state information derived from other applications, and DO NOT exist the ability to perform logical or arithmetic functions on data in any part of the packet.

No cheap plastic Fifty Nine Dollar Router from Amazon or EBay, or an Home Built Frankenstein with 'claimed' electrical manufacturing and running costs so extreme that the power provider will terminate service until

the electrical deficit is paid in full will ever match the power and security of the Check Point ZoneAlarm Secure Wireless Router Z100G.

What also sets the Check Point ZoneAlarm Secure Wireless Router Z100G apart from standard Consumer Routers or Home Built Frankenstein's is that the Z100G exists the ability to configure Firewall Rules,

Application Rules, and Internet Access as 'individual configurations' for each computer on the Network. The default maximum computers supported out of the box is five computers.

Support for more computers can be purchased as an Service.

In conclusion, the Check Point ZoneAlarm Secure Wireless Router Z100G also supports Virus Scanning at the Networks Edge. All Inbound traffic is scanned with the VStream Antivirus by SofaWare before

exiting the Router and entering the Local Network. Also controllable and configurable at the Networks Edge as Services are: Software Updates, Remote Management, Web Filtering, Email Antivirus,

Email Antispam, VStream Antivirus Signature Updates, Dynamic DNS, Dynamic VPN, Logging and Reporting, and Vulnerability Scanning.

Artificial intelligence, off topic Posts, off topic misinformed information, and advice that is self believed to be World renowned and legendary, will no longer have my focus and is Unprofessional.

Ya may want to read up on some of the open source UTM distros out there. ;)

You're doing quite a bit of lumping up the open source distros as unconfigurable, no real SPI, no application layer filtering, etc. Not true at all. They're actually very granular with firewall rules, and some..such as Untangle, are application aware...layer 7. Deep SPI..ever hear of Snort?

"Running costs so extreme..."? Myself...I use an old IBM Thinkpad T40 laptop. Pentium M...added a PCMCIA NIC, I have a small footprint, low power consumption, quiet firewall with built in keyboard and mouse. How nice is that?

Not to stray away from the OPs topic...but the reason open source UTM was introduced to thread was to give an option that was low cost...free even...no annual support fees required to maintain updates. Since the OP appears interested in UTM. Nice to have options, no? ;)

A lot of us here are computer enthusiasts...some even work in IT for a living. Thus, access to spare parts, old PCs, etc..certainly an option. Be green...stretch a few more years out of some old PC rather than tossing it in a land fill.

I just figured that they might not be a "power users", since they had to ask in the first place and easier might be better.. I shouldn't make assumptions though.
