The whole font management in Thunderbird is pittyful IMHO. Default fonts size is miniscule, i don't understand why nobody in the dev team sees that it's abnormal (outlook is much more normal). The entire options configuration is needlessly overcomplicated and cluttered.

Anyway, go to tools, options, display, formatting, fonts, minimum font size: change it according to your preference. I have 11, but i also use large fonts in Windows. You may prefer something bigger.

Oh i forgot. Also go to Tools, options, Composition, general, font : fixed width, size : choose large or extra-large, whatever you like most.

Make sure you exit Thunderbird and re-launch it in order to make settings work properly.

Sorry, i 've no clue about that, i am a Thunderbird newbie myself. I 've only used it since i installed Win 7 about 2 weeks ago. My text in the sender window is also smaller than in the main window. Fortunately that doesn't bother me.
