My bad.

It will still block things that link scanner will miss, the value of web guard comes from the suspicious I Frame blocking, exploit blocking and blacklisting, none of the code touches your hdd and thus it doesn't have to be removed, it saves the bandwidth from downloading the crap in the first place and blacklisting prevents access to dodgy sites regardless of what bit of malware the site might be delivering that may or may not be detected.

avira when i used it was good detections, fast with multi-core selected and reasonably low resources, but what got me was the nagging popup, i switched to avast free, liked it and bought the pro, which i recommend the avast free 100%

You will need to turn off real-time protection in one of them.

To give Antivir a fair try. What would optimum settings be? Ive heard good and bad about Webgaurd. Is webgaurd needed or not? I do download the occasional file in a .zip, .rar, .iso file.

Also how do I get it to start up in cleanse mode or quiet mode? I havent seen any way to configure that other than the installation wizard.

On the plus side it took 38 minutes to scan my HD last night. Found 3 warnings, but never displayed a removal message or anything.

Also how do I stop the splash screen from showing as my desktop loads? Its rather annoying to look at.

Hello there,

You may want to try this setting to get rid of the “splash screen”:

1. Open regedit and navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

2. In the right pane double-click avgnt and add /nosplash at the end of the path (ex. /min /nosplash). Avira changed /nosplash to /ns for version 9.

Regards,

Carlos

Alright now that this has been unlocked. Without the splash screen it doesnt take as long to load up at boot. How do you change the type of startup Avira does? Im trying to tamper with some configurations to get the best median between security and speed.

Hi there,

Well, about the setting you're asking I suppose it might be related to the “Early Load” feature that is now included in the free version of Avira 9.
I'm aware that during the installation setup you have the choice of selecting the “Early Load” or “normal boot”. However, Early Load has the disadvantage that increases your PC boot time for a few more seconds thus if you are the kind of person who want your desktop fully functional in just a few seconds after boot up then this feature is not for you.

About the Avira 9 Premium settings, I consider that the default settings are more than enough to protect your PC. But if you need to crank them up you have the choice to do so. Although, by doing so you also risk that some files you download from the Internet may be flagged as virus when in reality they are just False Positives.

About the Webguard, well, it's a good feature that stops drive-by-downloads before they are downloaded to your hard disk. Let's say, it's like a first line of defense, being the Real-time protection your second line of defense in case Webguard might miss something.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Carlos

Ive read Early Load if you will speeds it up. I wanted to try it both ways, but cant figure out how to configure that after I have it installed already.

I was looking for it in the settings too, I can't find it either, perhaps it's only an option during install.

Seems to start up faster for me with the startup options.

How do I submit a file for analysis with Avira? Its detecting Punkbuster files as trojans when its legit.

You could compress the file with a password "virus".And then sending the compression to Avira's E-mail.
