I signed EFF's online petition form. It was sent via email and fax to Schmidt.

dont think signing petition going to change googles way, when you are signing up for free services you are signing away your privacy, google make money from selling your data, if you dont use google Schmidt defiantly will listen

I don't use Google's services now. I do use their search, but only because I'm using XeroBank to do so.
