Because of these problems, it's all the more important to have multiple backups of any important files on the D: partition. You may want to make some copies in addition to your image backups. You don't want to lose anything if the repair attempts go wrong.

No I am not confident that a restore will work; hey you are the expert here

Anyway when I ruined the D partition I used a full image of the drive I had made beforehand to restore just D and it didn't fix the problem (assuming this size mismatch was caused back than).

I can try the other option but when you say "deleting the D: partition" do you mean deleting it's content of formatting it through Disk Management (is it possible to format just one partition?) or what else?

Also when you say "restore it with a slight resize (just a little smaller)" can you quantify this extra size and will it be taken off C: which is the only partition with free space?

As for EPM I will use it as a last resort since I have a bad experience with the program.
Every time I have used it I ended up with an unbootable system which fortunately managed to self-recover.
Could you please suggest a partition software for Vista?

I have one further advice I would like to ask you.
I will probably end up sending the laptop for repair anyway since the dvd drive doesn't work and before doing so I will delete all my data on D.
Is there a way to make sure nothing of thise data is going to be recoverable through undelete software?

TI 2009 has a built in utility called File Shredder (found under Utilities).

Click on Utilities\File Shredder, then choose the partition then the type of data erase algorithm you want to use - double check then hit the OK button!

You stated before (and below) that you did restore the D: partition image so I assume it's working. The main thing is that the data is restored correctly. Only you can tell that.

There's probably no easy way to find out exactly when the problem did occur.

I meant to use DD or another partitioning tool (Disk Management, for example) to remove the partition. It's space will then be unallocated space (no partition). A new partition can then be created in the space. This new partition can be created during the TI restore of the D: partition or before.

No space will be taken from the C: partition. When you restore the D: partition a little smaller, you'll actually have a little bit of unallocated space (probably a few MBs or so) at the end of the partition. Remember, the D: partition is being made smaller, not larger. The amount smaller is up to you, but I'd just change it by the smallest amount allowed by TI.

I usually use DD. Vista's Disk Management can be used too if the operations are simple. There are also quite a few free partitioning software programs available (Parted Magic, GParted, etc.).

Yes but the image I used to restore D: was created just before doing the resizing as a safeguard and without any error from ATI.
I will take your suggestion and do single folders' backups of D: just to be on the safe side.

I don't know this one (I just found something for Linux) but probably EPM is fine and it was just me not using it properly.

Anyway I got all your explanations, thanks a lot for your patience.
I will attempt one just before shipping the laptop to warranty to see if the problem can be fixed and a proper full image can be created.

I will let you know if I succed or I will update you when I get the machine back.
