    Between F-Prot and DrWeb which one do you think
    is the best ?
    I am talking ONLY for the DETECTION abilities of each program.
    In Virus Bulletin tests F-Prot seems to do a little better...

    (There are many differences at the way they work but I
    find them to be more suitable for my needs than other AVs...)

    Their detection abilities are probably so similar (that is, quite good) that you'd have to consider other attributes in order to make a distinction.

    As you have found they both seem to be equally good/bad with VIRUS detection as viewed by the results with virus bulletin;

    F-Prot with 9 passes and 7 fails;

    http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?frisk.xml

    and Dr Web with 14 passes and 15 fails;

    http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?drweb.xml

    While other testing sites generally find F-Prot slightly better in virus detection than Dr Web; see for example

    http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=62&mnu=62

    or http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse_2004_02.php

    Despite the results for trojan detection in the latter 2 testing sites, most people would agree that Dr Web would give better OVERALL detection of Viruses and TROJANS.

    In addition other characteristics of the programs may be important as optigrab suggested and in my experience in using both is that Dr Web may be better in actually curing/disinfecting any virus infection than F-Prot.

    But take into account that a new version of F-Prot is due very soon.

    At the present time with the versions available I would suggest that Dr Web would give you better overall detection of malware but either would give you top-notch protection.

    But I would recommend an Antitrojan program as part of a layered defense if F-Prot is the choice of your primary AV.

    The Workstation/PRO version of DrWeb now goes for $25/year from their USA agent.

    F-Prot goes for $29/year & has no USA agent that I know of.

    Wilders has an excellent set of guidelines on how to configure DRW.

    I have licenses for both AVs. DRW is my frontline defender because I like the *Russian Wolfhound nature* of its heuristics scanner. :)

    OK, here's my $.02 worth:

    Like Bellgamin,

    1) I also have licenses for both AVs (Dr. Web & F-Prot).
    2) I run/use Dr. Web as my primary/on-access AV.
    3) Neither of us is going to "run-down" F-Prot; however, I sleep better at night knowing Dr. Web is protecting my systems.

    I also have licensed copies of BitDefender Standard, Extendia AVK, E-trust, Command AntiVirus (CSAV), Panda (both Titanium & Platinum), QuckHeal, PC-cillin 2003, and VirusBuster.

    Just as an FYI: The $29 for F-PROT includes protection for up to 5 computers in your household. In addition, their USA distributor is:

    www.raeinternet.com

    ;)

  9. bellgamin,

    does the order of Dr Web from their USA agent include product updates as well as signature updates. I recall someone in another thread having their license not work with 4.31 because the key was only valid for 4.30 , and he had bought it less than half a year ago or something. So he was stuck with looking for something else, or paying again. That was a real shame,and I don't want to get caught.

    I couldn't tell from the agent's website what their policy was.

    I run the full workstation version of Dr Web but these threads seems to suggest that you can have access to new versions for the 'Home' edition during your license period.

    http://advancedforce.com/antivirus/av_home.html

    http://www.dials.ru/english/inf/news.php?id=451

    The only problem being is that the AUTOMATIC updater of the Home version will not let you download the NEW version, only signature updates are available.

    However, you can MANUALLY download any new versions during your license period.

    However, this thread, particularly Wizard's comments suggest that where you obtain your necessary key-file may also be important;

    http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=21225;start=0

    and he recommends purchasing the program from the main site; http://www.dials.ru/english/

    May be worth waiting for someone who uses the Home edition to confirm the above or try contacting support at the relevant site you are interested in purchasing from.

    Hi, the person who had problems getting an upgrade from 4.30 to 4.31 because of the license was me. In fact in the end I found that I was able to get ONE free upgrade during the license period and donwloaded and installed 4.31. The information is hidden away in a fairly obscure part of the website but I did infact get the new version in the end. So I'm happy. If you want more details let me know.

    Does DrWeb not offer free programme updates for the duration of the license?

    From my experience I can say that there was a delay
    in information from the website that there was a new version and that you had to download and install .

    After this was fixed,using the same key,
    everything went fine with the updates...

  14. Stevie V,

    only one free upgrade? Does that mean that if Dr Web released another version during your subscription period, you would not be able to upgrade or update? And if you had the Workstation version instead from the same vendor? Is the policy different because you have the Home version? Or because you bought from a different vendor? Or both? And even if you were entitled to that one free upgrade, how did you manage to take care of the keyfile problem which was version specific?

    Trans,

    Did you order from the same website as StevieV? Did you have to download and install your update because you had the Home version as well (as opposed to autoupdate?)? Would this have been different if you had the Workstation version or bought the Home version from a different vendor? And yours was not a version specific key file?

    Thanks for all the replies, I'm just trying to clarify whether the problem was version specific, or vendor specific, or both. For en extra 5 bucks, I'm just inclined to save myself some headaches, and order from the dials.ru.

    Hi MG. Unfortunately I have deleted all the stuff from the time but I am sure that I was only allowed one free update during the period and when I downloaded the new upgraded version I was emailed another key which I have saved. Now when I look under 'help' 'about' it says UPD Free: my name. The dealer name is 'InSoft EDV'.

    Concerning the *updating issue*...

    DrWeb for windows/personal use comes in 2 versions...
    1) Home version, also known {at times} as Lite version
    2) Workstation version, also known {at times} as Pro version

    The main differences between these versions are explained at...
    http://www.advancedforce.com/antivirus/av_home.html

    The Workstation version entitles you to ALL updates & upgrades during the license year.

    Updates to the Home version are constrained as follows...
    I bought my Workstation version from the reseller at...
    http://advancedforce.com/antivirus/av_ws.html

    The license keys etc. for my version came directly from the DrWeb folks {Dialog Science}...
    http://www.dials.ru/english/

    In other words, I downloaded DRW from the reseller, & paid the reseller for the 1-year license, but licensing keys, updates, and such are all being done via the DrWeb folks -- it's a *full-featured* product. No strings.

    If someone had problems updating, it's my OPINION that they have the Home version. There is no disadvantage to buying from the reseller, & it saves a goodly amount of $$$.

    grace & peace to all......bellgamin

    - Thx for pointing that out JIM almost forgot about that when I was reading the post. Wasn't sure if there was a USA agent. :)

    F-Pro is a very good AV and Dr.Web is also very good. Best thing to do take the one you wan't out of both. Use the one you feel more conf with and use the other has on-demand.
