Default server not found/invalid username/could not connect...

hi,
i am running v4 clients on xp sp2 & 3 updating via http to an update server 2003 r2 running v3.0.105. pc's & laptops run separate configs, however the primary update server is the same.
i regularly get last event warnings for all clients types for the following - server not found/invalid username and or password/could not connect to server/error downloading file from update server/download interrupted. i also get a protection status error status of - recent update attempts failed. there are no event errors.
i have spoken to eset on various occasions this will little success. they are helpful but have not been able to resolve the issue. they have suggested waiting and it will resolve itself.
has anyone else come across this?

Just in case, have you tried changing the port for updates via HTTP?
