Default safe version

I tried restoring my sister's drive from an image on a USB drive and ran into a problem. When I tried to use the "Full Version", I ended up with a black screen. I tried the "Safe Version" and realized that I couldn't use the USB drive image file and also found that a firewire drive was not being seen by TI. What would prevent the computer from using the Full Version and what good is the Safe Version if external devices can't be used with it? I've restored several drives with TI 10 without a problem. What are my options?

Here is one possible way forward that I have used.

If your computer is networked to another computer, then you can boot with the Acronis Boot Disk and restore the system by pointing Acronis Restore at the backup file on the network.

Obviously you have to put the .tib file to the second computer.

I was able to save some individual files from the C: drive to the USB drive before my attempt at restoring from an image file. Should that be possible while running the safe version? TI was able to see the USB drive and back up to it. But, when I try to restore from the image file on the USB drive the process hangs when I click next after selecting the drive on the "Select a partition or a whole hard disk to restore" screen.

When running from the TI CD, the Full version is Linux and it sometimes lacks good drivers for your system or may have some other incompatibility problem.

The Safe version is DOS-based but it is not MS-DOS. It is intended to do restores from internal HDs and it does not support USB, Firewire or LANs. However, it sometimes does work with USB but it depends on how the USB is implemented on the motherboard and BIOS.

TI10 doesn't appear to support the hardware. Download the trial version of TI2009 and create the rescue CD. It will restore but not create an image and it should be able to restore your TI10 image.

The other option is to make a TI10 BartPE CD which uses the Windows environment to do the restore.

I neglected to state that the version of TI I've been using to restore my sister's computer is TI 11, if that makes a difference. My successful restores have been while using TI 10.

TI11 wasn't known as a shining star in the TI version sweepstakes but the real point is that the Linux driver lineup gets changed with each version and sometimes even the make and model of the Linux itself.

TI2009 appears to have a pretty good track record supporting hardware and is worth a try particularly if the machine is a newer one. No, it doesn't support every PC on earth but what does!

Thanks for the input. If I install TI 2009, will it replace the TI 11 on my computer? Will I then have to reinstall 11 after I make a boot CD?

My sister's computer is a 3 or 4 year old HP from Best Buy. It's strange that this run of the mill computer wouldn't be able to use the full version restore.

Yes, it will replace it since there can only be one version of TI existing on a PC at a time. However, the CD is machine independent so if you have another machine you could install on it and make the CD.

There is no way for the average person who doesn't work for Acronis to know whether or not it will support a given piece of hardware unless you have seen it work on that model previously.

If your attempt to load the Full version from the CD gets far enough along before it hangs you can try II from this link. It sometimes is the solution.

Be careful of the spellings.

The TI 2009 boot CD seems to work with my sister's HP in that the full version appears to function. I managed to restore the C: drive using the image on the HP restore partition I accidentally activated. So, now I can give my sister the option of the computer's off the shelf state or the one from 9 months ago on the TI image file. Thanks for your help.

Hello maxoblivion,

Thank you for using Acronis True Image 10.0 Home

Please provide us the serial number for Acronis True Image 10.0 Home via PM so we can give you ISO image of Acronis bootable disc based on ISOLinux loader which will solve the issue.

Acronis True Image Home full version includes support of USB, PC Card (formerly PCMCIA) and SCSI interfaces along with the storage devices connected via them, and therefore is highly recommended.

Acronis True Image Home safe version does not include USB, PC Card, or SCSI drivers. Recommended for use in cases where problems running the full version occur.

Best regards,
