You can do both.
Most people say that doing it from Windows is faster but on my hardware Dell 3000 running XP SP3 it is quicker using the boot disk. Restores I always do from the boot disk.

There are a few cases reported here where backups in Windows which validate in Windows do not validate from the CD. Since you have to restore the boot partition from the Linux environment of the CD, it is essential that the backups can validate from the CD. If they do, then backing up in Windows is more convenient and usually faster.

Hello Joe60,
Thank you for your interest in Acronis Products Moreover while you backup your system from Windows there are no restrictions using different applications because of unique snapshot technology. Here is a description of Acronis Snapshot technology. Note that Acronis Bootable Rescue Media (full version) can display drive letters different from those you see in Windows, because Linux has its own rules of drive naming. Such a situation usually may arise after using partitioning software. This is absolutely normal and there is no need to worry about the difference in drive letters assignment. I would also recommend you look through user guide for detailed description of Acronis True Image program. Best regards, -- Dmitry Nikolaev
