Search: HostsMan, it does the trick, and also removes all comments to speed things up.

It's actually pretty easy to weed out duplicate entries using a spreadsheet program like Excel (Microsoft Office) or Calc (OpenOffice). Plenty of how-tos to be found via googling.

For dupe files-this one is free.

Not sure what you mean by "sources", but Hostsman is the way to go imho. It has an easy update function that auto-deletes any duplicate entries. While Eice is right that you can manually do it, it just is more hassle than you need to deal with. As far as comments, when you download a Host file and look at it in notepad, you'll often see * symbols and extra information about the entries off to the side. A program like Hostsman gets rid of those. It would really be worth your time to check it out. |

There is also a hosts file editor in the software topics, which can merge hosts files, and remove double entries and the comments.

Hi there, no, the comments aren't bad at all, they are basically descriptions of the blocked items and why they are blocked. They indeed are automatically removed by Hostsman. As far as notification of a website being blocked because of a Host file entry, what happens in my case is the website will just be a blank page instead of loading the site up. That's when I usually know the Host file was doing its work. I'm not sure of any way to have it or any other host file manager give a warning. Maybe someone else here does. |

1) Does it work similar to SpywareBlaster? 2) Which hosts file is better - SpywareBlaster or MVP? 3) With a hosts file I can block many ads in Google Chrome - right? |

Spywareblaster doesn't use a HOSTS file as far as I know, it just adds block lists directly to the browser. When I started using MVPS I ditched the SpywareBlaster & Spybot protection since it isn't browser biased, you should also see a very slight increase in browser speed. I recommend using HostsMan because it compacts the HOSTS file to a very minimal size.
