Best Free Encryption Software!
For those who were wondering, and did not already know! _______________________________________ Whole Disk and Virtual Disk Encryption TrueCrypt http://www.truecrypt.org/ _______________________________________ File Encryption AxCrypt http://www.axantum.com/AxCrypt/ _______________________________________ Email and File Encryption Gpg4win http://www.gpg4win.org/download.html _______________________________________ Note Encryption LockNote http://sourceforge.net/projects/locknote LockNote Homepage http://www.steganos.com/us/products/...note/overview/ fSekrit http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Other/fSekrit/ _______________________________________ Password Safe Encryption KeyPass http://keepass.info/ _______________________________________ Archive Compression Encryption 7zip http://www.7-zip.org/ Please Note: 7zip is doubted by some people to implement a form of strong Encryption, it uses AES-256bit Encryption, I read on a forensic forum a case where an investigator was trying to crack a 7zip file and was unsuccessful in his attempts, and to this day their is still no public case where anyone has been successful in cracking a 7zip file that has a strong password! (Please do not reply to this last remark about 7zip unless you have proof of your accusations, this topic has already been covered in a previous post) _____________________________________________________________ It is up to the user to always learn as much as they can about how to best protect themselves wile using Encryption Software, it is advised to read the user manuals to insure success especially before using whole disk encryption, and to always back up your valuable data no mater what the circumstances may be! It is also advised to learn about, Strong Passwords, Using Keyfiles, and protecting yourself against keyloggers! |

Those are definitely excellent selections, Warlockz. Visitors to Wilders who are beginners to encryption will find your post a good introduction. Good job!

Anyone have a suggestion for password management that is also compatible / can sync with BlackBerry?
I LOVE KeePass, and since I started using it I generate the longest password allowed by a site, even down to stupid stuff like FB and twitter, but that makes for a royal PITA on my BB when I have mobile apps for things. Right now, I just dont use my mobile apps, which is no biggie, but for say IM clients, there are times i need to login mobile and not having a pwd is a pain. I really dont want to email myself the password, copy, paste and mark as saved in the app. Prefernce would be a keepass type app that i can sync and that can input my pwd on my device as needed, but i would gladly settle for just an app that syncs all my passwords and accounts and do a copy paste on the BB. |

Wow Warlockz! Thanks. I have used truecrypt for making an encrypted folder, but not whole disk. I have heard a lot of talk about whole disc with PGP. I assume that is not free. I have axcrypt as well.
I have not heard of the email/file encryption software..Gpg4win..But I did create a little truecrypt file once and zipped it and it uploaded as an attachment in gmail. I'll have to read up on some of these others. Nice post.

Keepass has a blackberry app but it leaves a lot to be desired. No way to get it to auto-populate passwords though (to my knowledge). |

Watch out CaixFang. Don't understimate the risks coming from a compromised account on any social network. |

Just to be boring: it is not useful to zip an encrypted file: it won't get any smaller... maybe bigger. |

Highly unconcerned about that prospect. I rarely use SN sites, and basically only have them out there for old contacts to find me. If someone gains access to my SN account, they will gain nothing more than info about me that you can find anywhere on the net, and a long password that is only used for that site. But if you have more elaborate details of risks, Im willing to listen! |

Well, being able to use your SN account is pretty much the same as being able to use your identity on that particular social network. You might not be very active/attracted by Social Networks, but for sure many of your "firends" (meaning contacts on SN) are. If you add the fact that usually there is no cross-verification of the identity when using SN, you can be sure that the adversary impersonating you on the SN could get information about you/your friends easily. If such attack is brought against people who you don't usually hang out with (read: the friends on the SN that you rarely contact trough other means), although bringing potentially less information, will be much easier to perform. |
