Mozilla releases Firefox 3.5 beta

Mozilla on Monday released beta 3.5 of Firefox, a revamp of the open-source Web browser designed to include better performance, several new Web programming features, and a private browsing mode.

The earlier betas had been numbered 3.1, but Mozilla switched to the version 3.5 name after concluding the changes were more significant than it envisioned earlier. Mozilla has said earlier the fourth beta will the last, with more polished release candidates expected before the final version of Firefox 3.5 is released. Mozilla delays Firefox 3.5 RC release

The final version of Firefox 3.5 may yet make Mozilla's end-of-this-month deadline. But all things will have to go smoothly, and Mozilla would have to limit itself to a single RC.

The first release candidate (RC1) is due out next week (or thereabouts). There is a security test day scheduled for July 10th, so certainly not until after that.

FWIW, I uninstalled 3.0.10 and do not plan to install 3.0.11 nor 3.0.12. The 3.5 Beta 4 is working just fine for me. I do intend to install the release candidate of 3.5.

New Firefox hangs in limbo between beta and RC

On the same day that Apple released the public version of Safari 4 for Windows and Mac, Mozilla publishes an update to its Firefox 3.5 beta. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, they're not calling this a beta version, but it's not a release candidate, either.

Within the next 24 hours, the Firefox 3.5 beta 4 will auto-update to what Mozilla is calling a "preview" version. Users can also force the update by going to the Help menu, then Check for Updates. At the time of writing, it doesn't appear that users can download the 3.5 Preview version directly.
