In IE I very frequently use Tools - Internet Options to change the
Internet Security to Medium from High and back again to High a few minutes later, while the other possibles are permanently on High - Can someone please advise IF the Default browser was Opera or FF, 1) Are IE's Internet Options settings THEN completely out of business ? 2) If the answer to 1) is YES can anyone advise if there is a similar item as IE's Internet Options in Opera and FF ? |

While not an IE user, I believe you are talking of it's zones? Like a level, where low would be allow much activeX, and high would be block most activeX?
Opera and FF have a few settings built in them to handle scripting and active content, but to my knowledge nothing like IE. Outpost firewall used to have active content filtering, much like IE, where you coudl tell it what to do. May not help much, sorry. Sul. |

MICRO, I can only answer Firefox, although you might want to look at this Opera Tutorial until an Opera user responds to you.
If your default browser is FF, then the answer to your #1 question is YES. The IE Internet Options settings are for that browser only. FF does have a Tools > Options window and a much simpler UI to tweak itself than IE. IMO the Content Panel, Privacy Panel and Security Panel allows for somewhat similar controls as IE, however, where FF truly shines, is in their add-ons. Two of the best are Adblock Plus and NoScript and these two are like setting the IE Security tab on High. Hope this info helps. |

With Opera most of your internet settings are in Tools > Preferences > Advanced.
Here's a screenshot from Opera Alpha 10. This should be basically the same settings in the latest stable version.

Hello JRV. - Thanks again - Any chance you have a minute to read this below and comment on the second last paragraph please - I did try FF a minute ago but unfortunately I didn't savvy the Favourites, or should I say how to use them as I need quickly, they seem to place them in alphabetical whereas I need the most used folders ALL at the top, and forget alphabetical, maybe a bit more patience on my part required - I had also installed those two add-ons you refer to before I read the following, especially the second last, "Mozilla Firefox 3.0 is my first choice. It's safer than IE, so safe in fact that many users have reported no spyware infections since they started using the product. It also browses a tad faster than IE, is very stable and is more standards compliant. Firefox 3.0 has fixed a whole slew of issues that its predecessor suffered. Firefox 3.0 now starts up much faster than 2.0, handles memory better, and is the first official release of a Mozilla browser to pass the Acid 2 Web Standards test. With tabbed browsing and over 2000 free extensions (add-ons) that allow you to customize your experience, it provides the most flexibility, expanibility, and features of any browser to date. Firefox is now my everyday browser, though I still leave IE7 on my PC for the occasional web site that's designed around IE's non-standard features. If you need any further convincing then check out Gizmo's IE to Firefox migration guide. An equal first choice is Opera. It's a speed demon; probably the fastest of all the common browsers. But it's much more than that; it's full featured, standards compliant and safe. Just as Firefox is extensible through add-ons, Opera can be enhanced using Widgets, though there are not nearly as many of these available as there are Firefox extensions. Then again, it doesn't need as many extensions because a lot of the features added by Firefox add-ons are already built into the standard Opera browser. There's just so much to like about Opera V9 that you could easily create a case that it's better than Firefox. Indeed, Opera used to be my first choice, and if I could get an Opera replacement for some of my key Firefox add-ons, I'd probably switch back." The problem I have with addons (which I stopped using except for one) is they are not monitored by the Firefox Staff. I have had addons make unwanted unannounced changes to my setup which pisses me off. They are also a security risk IMO. That being said, I am currently using FF as my default browser mainly because of LastPass. Opera would (used to be) my first choice but they won't allow third party extensions (no LastPass.) If they allowed LastPass access to their API code, I would switch back in a heart beat, as Opera out of the box doesn't need the extensions FF needs to compete with it...they are built in. |

MICRO, I have nothing against Opera. I have the latest Portable Version installed on one of my USB drives but after switching from IE to FF awhile back, I just became more used to FF and haven't had the time to play around with Opera. First, let me answer one of the questions that seems to be bothering you:

You could probably ascertain that the last four para's belonged to outside reviewers, but as they looked to be a fair profile I just needed to ask the question - However I had since been reading your earlier post links and one of them refers to your latest mention - that auto. updates of FF add-ons can be stopped, so the second reviewer must have missed the very item he was pissed with. Oh yes, good to hear that I should have persevered with the Bookmarker prob. I thought I had. |

For Opera, 1) IE settings are not used in Opera. 2) Key F12 - global settings for turning off Java, plugins, and/or JavaScript. I keep all 3 of these off by default for safety. Settings for a particular site are set by right-click, 'Edit Site Preferences'. |

IE is all I've ever used so either alternative will probably take a bit of learning. |

1 ) All browsers have a setting for "make me your default browser".
This is a system wide setting , so that If you click on a link , or a webpage shortcut , your not asked "which browser do you want to use ?". However AFAIK this is the only system wide setting all browsers share. All the security/privacy setting are per browser. J
