antivirus initialisation failed

Since 2 days I am getting a RED ESS SysTray icon and the following error message on the ESS app main screen:

Antivirus is disabled.
Antivirus initialisation failed. Most modules will not function properly.

(I am running the German version of ESS, so this is my own translation of the error message.)

Reboot of system does not solve the problem. No software installed prior to this error occurring. Might have occurred after a ESS signature update, although I'm not sure. No problems whatsoever with ESS or PC before this.

Windows Vista Business, ESS 4.0.314.0, Signature DB 3957 (20090324).
