mobile phone protection (for an idiot)

hi, i had to buy a new phone, it's only a basic phone with standard web access. i'm pretty sure my old phone had something nasty on it (re-directs porn pop ups etc) do i need anti virus? and how do i install it? i read the sticky but do i download it to phone?
any basic advise, never installed anything on my phone before. thanks.
