Default Win Patrol 2009 Beta

Just reading BillP's blog, that he will include a new addition to the 2009
version of WP due out in a couple of weeks, and very handy it looks.

http://billpstudios.blogspot.com/

"When any kind of infection occurs all its related files will show up as recent additions to your system. WinPatrol 2009 includes a new single list that sorts critical files and entries by their date detected. There’s a really good chance any new malware files will show up at the top of this list".

Pitted Winpatrol beta against Winiguard which is an aggressive rogue security app.

Winpatrol didn't show all files that were created but on selecting "Delete on Reboot" for the recent files that it did show it was enough to kill the infection on reboot.

If Winpatrol could show all files created and delete the lot that would be great but it did do a good job anyways.

Thanks for testing Franklin. Seems the new 'recent programs' feature and the ability to delete on reboot is valuable.

I noticed a slight hike in memory usage, around 8mb compared to 3 or 4 awhile back. Same for you?

This might be because it's in beta, or as it is newly installed.

Just a suggestion for its layout: I'd like to see the 'active tasks' tab brought closer to the left hand side, as this is what users would probably use a fair bit to kill/shutdown programs. Then again, doesn't really bother me.

On first starting Winpatrol beta it sat around 3 meg and on bringing the gui up it went to around 6 meg and dropped back and sits around 4 meg on closing to tray.

Also tried Winpatrol against MS Antispyware 2009 and XP Police Antivirus with Winpatrol being able to kill both on reboot.

Left a few dregs around the place but the infections were dead.

Franklin, can you say if when you 'right click' on Scotty's icon
in the sys. tray it shows 'Recent' on the list, or all but ?

No Micro, it doesn't display Recent from the right click menu as yet.

Probably just an oversight and will be added later.

If a morphed version of some rogue hits the net that is zero day then Winpatrol should come in quite handy.

Good stuff Franklin. I've always found Winpatrol to be able to shutdown programs when the windows taskmanager fails.

You use all its real-time monitoring?

I've disabled:
Hidden files (work comp brought up too many alerts)
cookies
Scheduled tasks

Actually only start it manually for testing and to have a look around every now and then.

Have always liked Winpatrol for it's startup control.

Thanks - Yes, probably because it's the Beta version - Agree with your
last sentence too.

Been testing out the program, and it's new feature is great - tracking every exe that runs.

About leaving a few dregs, that can be cleaned up by scanning with windows explorer.

Thanks Bob - I am quite happy with the final Beta - but if you install
the latest is there any chance you could mention if the icon has a right-click ability to show 'Recent' on the menu, if it does I will upgrade.

Unfortunately right-click of icon offers everything but "Recent".

I agree that Bill probably missed it but since I would seldom look at it, if it's by design, it's no big deal for me...

Thanks for the update Bob, you saved me from having to
uninstall/install again - maybe in time - Plus I am looking at a coupla
neat little Apps. from Shane - One of which includes a Right-clicker
but upto now I can't tell if it can add such as 'Recent', or if that can only
be added via Bill himself as it's 'part' of the whole, rather than
WP itself - I need Shane's tiny no-install/portable 'Cleanmem' anyway.
