Ad-aware's released a new version of their product - Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition, with "behavior-based threat detection and integrated real-time monitoring". Has anyone tried this?

Yes, the scanner was fast, but I can't seem to stop it from scanning because it scans every second of the day, like it won't stop scanning even if you stop the scan unless you turn the program off. The security isn't so good, but it's ok.

One thing I noticed, for a very long time, is that, it always detects malicious domains, which I block in my customized HOSTS file, as being good domains being blocked.
Let's imagine something like norton-kaspersky(dot)com, etc. These are clearly malicious domains. The real time protection, if selected, also blocks access to malwaredatabase, which is a safe site and we can find info about new malicious domains, including rogue av/as. It can be unblocked, but it is not malicious domain. They have a lot to improve. |

This actually seems like a good free antispyware. It has real-time process protection and it's fairly light. I scanned it with around 60 fairly recent malware and it detected more than SAS or MBAM individually.

You can activate the AV engine with heuristics, in the free version
.Don`t know if it actually works ![]() EDIT: It propably doesn`t. Security Center doesn`t recognize it. Last edited by webster : January 24th, 2009 at 02:51 PM. |

One thing I'm confused about, how come so many products detect 100% of his malware? "Ad-Aware scored 10 of 10 points on the malware-blocking test. That's an honor it shares with a-squared Anti-Malware 4.0, McAfee Total Protection 2009, Norton, ThreatFire 3.5, and ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 2009." I thought generally signature products detected around 50% of real world malware. |

Ad-Aware. A2, Threatfire, Norton, ZA and even McAfee all have some kind of Behavior Blocking or HIPS or Cloud Computing ability. Due to this even if they spot some suspicious activity; The same is taken as a detection.
But this is true only for his real-time test. His On demand scan on a infested system, never yield a 100%. And yes, his sample set may not be the best or the newest. After all the reviewer is not a prof. AV tester like those at AV-Test or AV-Comparatives who have a great stock of malware samples and some even custom edited/modified to tease the scanners. |

The pro and plus versions include the avira engine. Pretty light, 22MB RAM when idle and no slowdowns. Removes threats before windows boots.

Haven't tried it, but sounds like lavasoft is making a return to form, kind of like norton over the past year.
Just noticed their antivirus-helix product is relatively cheap ($32 for two years), even less than from avira's site, and with avira's engine, surely is improving their image.

I forgot to mention that it lacks a HTTP scanner.

Is a HTTP scanner limited to supported browsers? Cause if that's the case, I've never been affected by it as I run the unsupported Opera browser.
Does for example NIS feature a HTTP scanner? |

Adware/Spyware detection/cleaning is intergrated in most AVs nowadays. What's the point of another product?

I had a customer yesterday who had several spyware & Adware infections along with a Winantivirus 2009 variant. His protection was AVG & Adaware+Adwatch.
