I think the "duke nukem forever" jokes will finally be laid to rest

It's been a while... but it should prove interesting to see the general reaction to this suite-newcomer to the lineup.

And yes, this is V5 for the suite+standalone AV, as demonstrated by the images in the estore (e.g. http://www.av-desk.com/static/new-www/50_ss_en.png )

edit: although the Russian homepage still displays "Dr web version 5 beta"

this isnt really a typical internet security suite though, there's no firewall which is typically in the suites and http scanning is normally included in the AV only as well.

Hopefully a slightly better translation than google could manage by yours truly:

Quote:
Company <<Doctor Web>> - Russian developer of information security products under the brand Dr.Web- announces the release of the new version of "Dr. Web for Windows 5.0"

The release of the new version for the company, which is significant with the change of the version number- is always a big step forward in development - says the author of the Dr.Web antivirus, Technical Director of the company <<Dr. Web>> Igor Daniloff. Given the magnitude and complexity of modern threats, we have targetted our efforts on the newest protection technologies, which let us not only effectively defend against known viruses, but also be ready to protect users against new, unknown damaging programs (threats).
Across the whole row of technological indicators , the new version of Dr. Web does not yet have a contender to match it in the antivirus industry.

New technologies and improvements of Version 5.0

Cures that, which others cannot even see!

The possibility to cure active inefctions, defense against viruses, unique technologies for the processing of objects in memory, and an excellent ability to neutralise active infections, gives Dr. Web the ability to install on an infected PC that would otherwise be seen as a "lost cause" - was and still is a main advantage of Dr. Web, with anybody yet to better the technological advantages of Dr. Web. A shining exmaple of this- the ability of Dr. Web to disinfect complex viruses, like MaosBoot, Rustock.C, Sector. Technologies, enabling Dr. Web to effectively fight with active viruses and not only detect "clinical collections" has received in this new version a further update.

Reliable immunity.

Self defense and reliablility to attacks has been realised in Dr. Web for Windows 5.0 on the highest level. In the self defense module Dr.Web SelfPROtect, is a total control of access and changes to files, processes, windows and registry keys of the program. The module itself installs itself in the system as a driver, and unloading or unauthorised termination of its working is not possible until reboot of the system.

The fight <to advance>

Effectiveness of the detection of a modern antivirus is not only shown by the number of records in it's virus database (e.g. the number of known threats - but also the technologies, which enable the program to fight with as of yet unknown threats, and even with as of yet non existent viruses. In version 5.0 is realised a new technology of univeral unpacking FLY-CODE, which enables the detection of viruses, scripts packed with packers unknown to Dr. Web, based on specialised signatures in the virus database of Dr.Web and heuristic routines of the Dr. Web scanning module of possible presence of a dangerous object in the archive.

To confront unknown threats a unique non-signature based Origins Tracing (tm) scanning also receieved an update. The current creation has already proven it's high effectiveness during epidemics, during which a large number users protected by other products where negatively affected. Origins Tracing (tm) complements traditional signature based scanning and heuristic analyer of Dr. Web and enhances the detection of previously unknown malware.

Effective countermeasures to rootkit-technology

Dr.Web for windows- one of the small number of cutting edge products, capable of not only detecting, but also effectively neutralising viruses, which utilise rootkit-technology.
An objective illustration of this- widespread use of the free treating utility "Dr.Web CureIt! (R) by users of other antivirus solutions for curing their computers of rootkits which had breached their computers. In version 5.0 a new version of the Dr. Web Shield (TM) driver has been realised, which allows the program to fight even with rootkit technologies of the future.

A look into the depth

The ability of the antivirus engine to unpack archives and the depth of scanning of archived objects noticeably influences on the quality of detection. Dr.Web is capable of fully checking archives at any nesting level. In this way, even if a malicious object is archived many times, and uses different types of supported archivers, Dr.Web will always find and neutralise the threat. In addition to this, support for tens of new packers and a line of improvments during working with packed files, including also files packed many times and even packed with different packers.

Improved speed

Always light and manouverable, Dr. Web for Windows version 5.0 has got even faster. New and optimised technologies have significantly improved the scanning process. Thanks to the fast acting antivirus engine, Dr.Web scanner is up to 30% faster than the previous version when checking memory, boot secotrs, contents of hard drives and removable drives.

<Features section, already translated by Dr.Web>

Today, releasing the new version onto the market, we offer 2 new products: The classic of the antivirus industry- Dr.Web Antivirus for Windows, and new complex product for protection against internet-threats- Dr.Web Security Space, commentates general director of <<Doctor Web>> Boris Sharov. We hope that the efforts of our developers will be appreciated by all who value information security and care about protecting their details- All of this Dr.Web has been providing it's users since 1992.

I updated to the v5 of the antivirus only. Running silk smooth, scanning a bit faster but have some false detections. It suggests that some EXECryptor packed files are "Probably Trojan.Packed.xxx" and some older threatfire installer contains "Probably BATCH.Virus"

It seems to me that the v5 is has extremely aggressive heuristics, probably the FLY-CODE thingy.

From the website:

"Low-cost upgrade to Dr.Web Security Space

Starting December 18, 2008 users of Dr.Web for Windows. Anti-virus&Anti-spam shall be able to upgrade to Dr.Web Security Space free of charge.

Users of Dr.Web anti-virus for Windows can upgrade to Dr.Web Security Space at the price of renewal."

What is the difference between Dr.Web for windows vs Dr.Web anti-virus for windows?

Confusing
