InstallFile v1.2 [132k] W9x/2k/XP FREE
http://www.kraftig.com/InstallFile/ {Replace missing system files} Have you ever had the problem where you can't run one of your favorite programs because "one of the dlls suddenly has the wrong version number, probably as a result of the installation of another program. After searching the disk and CD-ROMs, you find the right version only to discover the wrong version cannot be replaced. At this point, typically you would reinstall your favorite application, perhaps losing a lot of customized options." There's no reason to have to reinstall that application though... just download InstallFile! InstallFile is composed of two files: Installfile, which is a command-line utility for replacing locked files on the hard disk immediately after a reboot, and Winstallfile, which is the same thing, but just in a Windows interface. InstallFile is simple, small, DEFINITELY effective, and should be a staple on every technician's utility CD.

What if you to decide to upgrade Internet Explorer.
Setup will want to update scores of dll's, but it won't be able to, which means you'll end up with a botched installation if I understand correctly what it is that InstallFile does. It sounds great, but I'm not so certain of its usefulness.

Something else: If you have your Windows CD-ROM, and hold on to your Internet Explorer cabs you really have every file you need at your disposal.
You can then restore it whenever the need should arise using SFC in Windows 98 or Msconfig/Expand file in Win ME and XP. Besides, Windows ME or XP have System File Protection, and won't even allow third party programs to replace a system file by a lower version, if I'm not mistaken.

Win2K also has system file protection.

Thanks, I didn't know that.
I guess this is just one more program that hasn't been thought out too well... ![]() A much better alternative would probably be something like NIS File Check or RegRun which at least allow you to make up your own mind...
