Smile PCLOS 2009 beta released...

Been a while gestating...but...coming soon to a box near you
Really sounds more like a 'pre-beta'
Sad that Texstar might be off the project for a while.

Still no hope of x64. PCLOS is Mandriva refined, so easy to use and setup and with all working drivers.

Hello,
I'll definitely look into this.
Got some 10 articles up the sleeve, after that ... man, too much good stuff, too little time.

What is there to give up on ? PCLOS is a rolling release, keep it updated and you have the latest version.....no 6 month release versions.....

Quote:
Q: Since PCLinuxOS is a rolling release so anyone who regularly keeps his/her current stable 2007 or Minime 2008 installation updated/upgraded from repos once they are fully working will he/she be able to upgrade to final release of PCLinuxOS 2009?

------> or do we need another fresh install after the final release?

Quote:
if you have a 2007 install, updating it and adding a new kernel will make it as up to date as any final that is released.

the beta out at present is a test release and not meant to be used further than the next beta. each of these betas is a full install, because these are used for bug hunting.

I don't think PCLOS will have a 64bit version until 64bit is more mainstream or PCLOS gets more developers to keep up

Couple of shots running the livecd in virtualbox. It installs fine and runs great in virtualbox 2.0.2. Guest additions are a breeze to install as well, i wish more distros were this easy to install and use in a VM.

This is one nice distro. Flash is working great. Can't get audio to work. That could be easily fixed though. I have one of those intel-hda soundcards..they are a beast. I found something very interesting in the utilities folder.

An option to "Restore The Master Boot Record" or mbr. I haven't saw that option in any other distro. I'm a linux newbie and could have overlooked it. I wonder if this would make a good rescue disk for grub? Textar, I believe that's his name has done a tremendous job.

I really like it.

I went to all the news sites to make sure video and flash would work. Remember, I haven't got audio yet. Flash worked fine on cnn, foxnews, bbc. However, when I went to the drudgereport. I saw a lot of black boxes where pics should have been. I'm attaching the image.

That's to be expected in betas though.

Thanks for the screenshots. Looks nice. Can it be installed in a USB flash memory stick?

Well, that just killed it for me... Unfortunately, looks like it's still old KDE 3.x and no KDE4. And no x64 either, so I will pass already.... shame. KDE4 is just so much nicer than 3.x. Nothing much new to see there from the looks of things... Oh well....

Looks like they have some stability problems with KDE4 so they're using KDE 3.5.10 instead. Once they've fixed that issue KDE4 will be available from the repos.

KDE, PCLOS has a better control center.

You can get ubuntu with KDE and pclos with gnome so theres no differences there. However it looks like pclos may have a few extra handy features for the power user, you could probably accomplish the same in ubuntu but probably not as easily.

I would rate them very similar in so much as they are both excellent out of the box experiences with little tweaking needed for an average user. Of course you can get KDE and XFCE in Ubuntu by installing the separate Kubuntu or Xubuntu distros.... In PCLOS you can install all 3 desktops in one setup by installing the Xfce and Gnome metapackages and switch between them at will, so that's kinda nice.. PCLOS was my very first distro and one of my favorites for a long time. Ubuntu is a current favorite as well. I hope they do the new PCLOS as well as the previous ones.

PCLOS = 'rolling release' + Synaptic = easy system type updates
(TBH, not sure whether this applies to full version releases ie 2008 >> 2009. )

Control Panel in PCLOS is prolly the best of the genre in LinuxLand for non cli meisters
Texstar and the rippers are possibly the 'best' packagers around.
Stability is put ahead of cutting edge

2007>2008> to 2009, yes http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showp...96&postcount=6

I updated fully updated 2007 to 2009 (using testing repo) and all is fine

Ah Cool

Just a q then: re:

I interpreted this to mean that if you do a full update to current beta release, you cannot then go 'past' that release

I,ve likely misunderstood exactly how this beta schedule works...??

I find it interesting too, but it's Mandriva's Control Center no?
