Installing Thunderbird and Linux

I downloaded thunderbird.tar.gz and extracted the file but I have not been able to get it installed. Could someone help me out on installing thunderbird?

cant you search for thunderbird in the package manager? and install it that way?

I agree with lodore. The Package Manager method is so much easier. You should update it first by hitting the Reload button.

I am using ubuntu. I downloaded thunderbird from the package manager and tried to setup an account. I could download messages from the internet provider but when I tried to send a message it would keep asking for my password. I tried changing the server and about everything I could change and I never could send any mail so I thought I would download it from the internet and see if it would work. Thunderbird seems to accept my password for receiving email but not to send.

Every archive (tar.gz and such) contains a readme and install text files, which explains how to install and configure. This is your first start point.

And indeed, why not installed TB via apt or synaptic, if it has not been installed in the first place?

Mrk, I think he did try it via the repos already and can't get it to send email. Sounds pretty odd to me, but I am out of ideas......
