Orbit Downloader over here, it was the first DM that didn´t suck IMO. I now use it once in a while for big downloads, and if I need to dowload several files at the same time. But the best part about it is the file sniffer function, I use it to mostly to download Flash videos, freaking awesome!

None for me. Back in the dial up days...they were handy..with occasional disconnects 'n such. But with full time broadband now...I haven't found the need for them.

Broadband has diminished the importance of a download manager but I find have multiple threads still greatly increase speeds.

I suppose...depending on what your broadband is...many areas of the world broadband may still be 1.5 megs or less.

my "broadband" is the cellular variety and it maxes out at 800 kbps....wish wi-max or something else would get here already

Many years ago I used Download Accelerator (or something like that)... it was plagued wih adware.

My broadband speed with/without IDM is 40 KB/s...
My wireless speed is without IDM 40-60KB/s and with IDM 150-200KB/s

With dialup service or any internet service with an unreliable connection, a download manager is a necessity. I used the free version of Star Downloader very heavily when I had dialup. It worked very well and is adware/spyware free. I downloaded some very large files with it over several weeks by running it at night when the phone wouldn't be in use, including 600+ MB ISO files for Linux live CDs. I don't download near as much as I used to so I haven't been using it.

If the connection is fast and stable, then a download manager isn't necessary, but they can still be useful. Star Downloader for instance integrates with most AVs and can automatically scan downloads. If you need to reboot, you don't lose what you've already downloaded. The ability to schedule downloads can be useful if your connection isn't real fast.

I've used Reget Deluxe for years - great download manager! And works with Firefox too.
