Hello!
Thank you so much for your speedy reply- I was surprised to see that someone had actually replied to this so quickly! I followed your instructions just now. I found a pesky program by the name of "Search 2020" which I was unable to remove. It would constantly show up with erroneous search results in my Google Searches. After following your instructions, those search results are no longer present. However, when I checked up on it today, it is still present under "add/remove programs." While running Spybot S& D, I also found that I was getting a lot of results pertaining to a product called "Backweb Lite", which, according to the information the program provides, is also Spyware. My current log reads: Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7 Scan saved at 11:31:25 AM, on 2/7/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\brsvc01a.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\brss01a.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ezSP_Px.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb07.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\WINDOWS\AGRSMMSG.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\KodakCCS.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ScsiAccess.EXE C:\Program Files\Sony\Photo Server 20\appsrv\PicAppSrv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\VAIO Media Platform\SV_Httpd.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\VAIO Media Platform\UPnPFramework.exe C:\unzipped\hijackthis[1]\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/stp/ymsgr*http://my.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.sony.com/vaiopeople R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,Shellnext = http://www.sony.com/vaiopeople F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\ycomp5_3_12_0.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.ocx O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-C0FF-FD60B590A87D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\Real\Toolbar\RealBar.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Radio - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdxm.ocx O3 - Toolbar: REALBAR - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-C0FF-FD60B590A87D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\Real\Toolbar\RealBar.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Yahoo! Hi Sheda,
Check the following items in HijackThis. Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked: R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/stp/ymsgr*http://my.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html O4 - Startup: Download Plus.lnk = C:\Documents and Settings\Shuchita\Application Data\DownloadPlus.exe Then reboot and delete: C:\Documents and Settings\Shuchita\Application Data\DownloadPlus.exe C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\X0ff <= entire folder c:\program files\winfavorites <= entire folder C:\WINDOWS\ziccxncq.exe BackWeb Lite was probably installed with the software for your Kodak camera. (I noticed the service running) I removed BackWeb Lite with Spybot S&D without interfering with the program itself. (No guarantees on that one) Then click Start > Run > type or copy & paste regedit > OK In the Registry editor navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete the orphaned key for search2020 in the right hand pane. Regards, Pieter

Thank you very much, Peiter!
I got along just fine with all of that and I also uninstalled the software for my camera. However, when I came to: "Then reboot and delete: C:\Documents and Settings\Shuchita\Application Data\DownloadPlus.exe C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\X0ff <= entire folder c:\program files\winfavorites <= entire folder C:\WINDOWS\ziccxncq.exe" I could not find the programs/folders you were speaking of. I could not find them! I tried search, I tried looking manually, but I simply couldn't locate them. - Sheda. |

Hi Sheda,
You can safely assume these were already removed by AdAware or Spybot S&D. Everything else worked out fine, I hope? Regards, Pieter

Peiter, I have to tell you that this website is so very commendable. I got my computer during March of 2003. Around January of this year, I began to notice it was... for a lack of better words, dying. But thanks to your services, my computer is up and running just like new.
Thanks for ressurecting my computer! YOU GUYS ROCK! I'll reccomend you to everyone who I hear is having problems with their computer! - Sheda |

Hello Peiter,
My dad recently decided to reformat the harddrives (to my dismay.) However, this evening, I discovered him downloading more junk onto my computer. Therefore, I decided it was time to HijackThis and post yet another log. Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7 Scan saved at 8:32:07 PM, on 2/19/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\brsvc01a.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\brss01a.exe C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Media Music Server\SSSvr.exe C:\Program Files\Sony\Photo Server 20\appsrv\PicAppSrv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\VAIO Media Platform\SV_Httpd.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\VAIO Media Platform\UPnPFramework.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\VAIO Media Platform\sv_httpd.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\VAIO Media Platform\UPnPFramework.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe C:\WINDOWS\AGRSMMSG.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ezSP_Px.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMETS~1\DM\bin\dmserver.exe C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe C:\Program Files\WhenUSearch\Search.exe C:\WINDOWS\wt\updater\wcmdmgr.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Shuchita\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis[1].zip\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/stp/ymsgr*http://my.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.sony.com/vaiopeople R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://files.cc.cometsystems.com/assist/cc/1.0/assist_st.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,Shellnext = http://www.sony.com/vaiopeople O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.ocx O2 - BHO: (no name) - {576EB0AD-6980-11D5-A9CD-0001032FEE17} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Common\ycheckh.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D14D6793-9B65-11D3-80B6-00500487BDBA} - C:\PROGRA~1\Comet\Bin\csbho.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Radio - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdxm.ocx O3 - Toolbar: Starware - {FE6BC4EF-5676-484B-88AE-883323913256} - C:\PROGRA~1\Comet\Bin\csietb.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AGRSMMSG] AGRSMMSG.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ezShieldProtector for Px] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ezSP_Px.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VAIOSURVEY] C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Survey\SurveySA.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VAIO Recovery] C:\WINDOWS\Sonysys\VAIO Recovery\PartSeal.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickFinder Scheduler] "C:\Program Files\Corel\WordPerfect Office 2002\Programs\QFSCHD100.EXE" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wcmdmgr] C:\WINDOWS\wt\updater\wcmdmgrl.exe -launch O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DM_Server] C:\PROGRA~1\COMETS~1\DM\bin\dmserver.exe /onreboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WhenUSave] C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WhenUSearch] C:\Program Files\WhenUSearch\Search.exe O4 - Global Startup: Billminder.lnk = C:\Program Files\Quicken\billmind.exe O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE O4 - Global Startup: Quicken Scheduled Updates.lnk = C:\Program Files\Quicken\bagent.exe O4 - Global Startup: Quicken Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Quicken\QWDLLS.EXE O9 - Extra button: AIM (HKLM) O9 - Extra button: Related (HKLM) O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links (HKLM) O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.sony.com/vaiopeople O16 - DPF: {30528230-99F7-4BB4-88D8-FA1D4F56A2AB} (YInstStarter Class) - http://download.yahoo.com/dl/installs/yinst0401.cab O16 - DPF: {A17E30C4-A9BA-11D4-8673-60DB54C10000} (YahooYMailTo Class) - http://us.dl1.yimg.com/download.yahoo.com/dl/installs/yse/ymmapi_416.dll O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{CD3EEA64-720A-4F5A-95AB-52B94FA97EC6}: NameServer = 206.13.28.12 206.13.29.12 There is a bar on the bottom of my screen (by the start bar) which says " SearchBar." Hi Sheda,
Before you start, please unzip hijackthis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder in the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a Temp folder. First try to remove SaveNow aka WhenUSave aka Save! in Add/Remove software. Either way continue with what's below. Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked: R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/stp/ymsgr*http://my.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://files.cc.cometsystems.com/assist/cc/1.0/assist_st.html O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D14D6793-9B65-11D3-80B6-00500487BDBA} - C:\PROGRA~1\Comet\Bin\csbho.dll O3 - Toolbar: Starware - {FE6BC4EF-5676-484B-88AE-883323913256} - C:\PROGRA~1\Comet\Bin\csietb.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wcmdmgr] C:\WINDOWS\wt\updater\wcmdmgrl.exe -launch O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DM_Server] C:\PROGRA~1\COMETS~1\DM\bin\dmserver.exe /onreboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WhenUSave] C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WhenUSearch] C:\Program Files\WhenUSearch\Search.exe Then download Spybot - Search & Destroy After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates. Next, close all IE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it marks in red. Or, download Ad-Aware at lavasoft.usa.com After installing AAW, and before running the program, update by using the Globe icon. Shut down and restart Ad-Aware. Now press "Scan Now", "Select drives\folders to scan" and select the active partition (usually C: ), then 'next', and let Ad-Aware scan your drives. It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Click 'Next' again. Rightclick in that pane and choose "select all" and click 'next'. It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK. Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot. Read this on how to minimize the risk of infection: http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957. Regards, Pieter

I think everything is generally working okay, though I am worried because I have so many proccesses running. I read somewhere that multiple instances of certain ones mean that there is a virus. (blaster worm, I think)

Thank you very much. I believe that there are some extra buttons in my standard button toolbar for I-explorer and I am very tempted to delete them, but I read somewhere that you shouldn't delete things in HijackThis without the advice of professionals.
