I have tried many antiviruses but all of them cause a major problem at some point to my computer.
Antivir - The updater crashes all the time and some applications (eg games) take long to load. Avast - Perfect and light but caused my shutdown to stall for an extremely long time. Kaspersky IS 2009 (build 357) - Not sure how since everyone tells me this is light but it slowed all my applications down. All my applications take almost a minute longer to load compared to avast and antivir. I hope this is a conflict because i really like the protection that kaspersky offers. Boot and shutdown is speedy though. AVG - Waiting for the fixing update before i go near it. Is there any other antiviruses i could try or any answers to these problems? Free or paid i don't mind as long as it offers strong protection and light. Popular antiviruses are my preference (eg nod, kaspersky) but not a must. My computer is pretty low-tech with 512mb ram and integrated graphics but until xp support is gone i am not getting another computer. I am currently using kaspersky is 2009 because i like its strong firewall and strong antivirus but i don't know how much longer i can handle the slowness. I will try delete files and programs to see if i can speed it up.

Maybe Kaspersky slows down because HIPS analyze any application the first time it is started?

Give F-Prot a try. They have a 30 day trial and would be extremely shocked if it caused any problems.

Dr Web is lower mid tier so almost always behind the likes of Avira and Kaspersky in av-comparatives and av-test.org results. Also tends to be behind other players like NAV, Sopohs, Trend, ESET, BD etc. F-prot is upper mid tier so behind Avira and Kaspersky. However after the recent upgrade, tends to be on par with NAV, Sopohs, Trend, ESET, BD etc.

i don't think drweb is behind tbh. i don't judge av's by test results thou.
i generally judge by real life experience. drweb will protect you very well and there lab is fast at adding missed samples. i judge by how the av reacts on my machine. aka does it slow my machine down. does it have any issues with the programs i use, update frequency. how dedicated the company is and is it improving on any weak points. to sum it up don't judge a book by its cover try the av on your machine and see how it goes. i think you will like both drweb and f-prot. choose the one you like most you wont be disappointed with eiether. no one can make the choice for you.

Agreed. Just summing up results from avcomparatives and avtest. I should have added that it wouldn't make a huge different for most users. Cheers, Jeremy

Stability is one of the reasons why I chose Dr.Web and after that, never had to look for another av. If you like "minimalistic" programs, give it a try

Run naked. Here's how:
Make a drive image and keep it offline. Use Firefox with NoScript. Use a webmail service that uses an antivirus scanner such as Yahoo and Hotmail. Use an Instant System Recovery software (e.g. FDISR, Returnil, etc.) Run an online virus scan weekly. Pray. SourMilk out

I have had good luck with AVG free on old slow machines. Perhaps your rig could benefit from a format and clean install of XP.

I would also suggest to give a try of Rising Antivirus 2008 free. It's processes/services consume 18-20 mb. It provides excellent protection and I did not noticed any slowdowns. Quote:

I agree with OneCare. I did install it on a XPHome Laptop with 512MB RAM (the 3rd part of my cycle) and it works perfectly. Now this machine is running fine with a good protection (firewall + antivirus), the backup is going fine (scheduled weekly) and OneCare will manage your system performance. I´m happy with this.
