Thumbs up SpywareBlaster 4.1 released!

SpywareBlaster 4.1 has been released!

Prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software!

New in this version:
-Mozilla Firefox 3 support
-Numerous bug fixes and tweaks

This 4.1 release provides enhanced protection, performance, and bug fixes.

UPDATING OPTIONS IN SPYWAREBLASTER
SpywareBlaster still offers the built-in Check for Updates feature. This feature is completely free and allows you to keep up-to-date by clicking on a button in the SpywareBlaster interface.

SpywareBlaster also offers SpywareBlaster AutoUpdate - a brand-new updating solution. Just set it up, and AutoUpdate will check at every system boot for the latest updates and enable the newest protection (other options are available).

As much as we would like to provide auto-updating functionality for free, costs are simply too great to make it feasible. AutoUpdate functionality is $9.95 (US) per year, which helps to cover the bandwidth costs. The Check for Updates function remains completely free, as does SpywareBlaster. You only need to pay if you wish to have the extra convenience of AutoUpdate.

SpywareBlaster is freeware.
Download the latest version here:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

System Requirements: Windows 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Vista.

Enjoy!

Best regards,

-Javacool

P.S. If you have any problems please don't hesitate to post.

Requirements:

Windows 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Vista.

Provides Protection for the Following Browsers:
  • Internet Explorer
and any browsers that use the Internet Explorer engine, including:
    • AOL web browser
    • Avant Browser
    • Slim Browser
    • Maxthon (formerly MyIE2)
    • and more
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Netscape
  • Seamonkey
  • Flock

Slim Operation:

As always, SpywareBlaster doesn't use any services, drivers, or anything that constantly runs in the background, consuming your computer's memory and processing time. You just open SpywareBlaster, set your protection, and close it - you're protected.

And it works great with other reputable security and privacy applications, including anti-virus, anti-trojan, and even other anti-spyware programs. There's no such thing as a 100% effective solution, and SpywareBlaster was designed from day one to be a compatible, effective part of any security setup you may want to configure.

Great job, thanx

Can this be installed over the previous version? Or do we need to uninstall the old and install this?

Hi,

Either should work, but we do recommend a clean install (uninstall the old + then install the new) if you haven't done it in a while.

Best regards,

After a clean install - i.e. first disabling all protection, then removing via
Add/Remove and then installing, the database loaded after updating
remains at 10421 items dated 6/3/2008. Why is this ?

Hi,

That database date is correct, and is the database release that is included with the SpywareBlaster 4.1 installer.
It was the most recent database release that cleared the testing process that goes into new releases.

The first post-4.1 database update will be released relatively soon, and you'll be able to get it via the integrated Check for Updates feature and SpywareBlaster AutoUpdate.

EDIT: I should also add that the database release date is currently displayed in the common U.S. date format: MM/DD/YYYY. So 6/3/2008 is June 3rd, 2008.

Best regards,

-Javacool

According to javacool in post #8 above, either installing over the top (as you did) or uninstalling and doing a fresh install should work. He does recommend doing a fresh install though.

If everything seems to be working as it should, then I would leave it alone if I were you. If the way you did it makes you uncomfortable, then disabling all protections, uninstalling and installing again should be good too.

Javacool -

Some vendors are seeing the new sbautoupdate as malware/suspicious

Report from a compatriot's AVG install:

Resident Shield:
Torjan horse Dropper.Agent.IPC C:\Program Files\Spywareblaster\sbautoupdate.exe

VT scan of a fresh install

It's just a misread by AVG??

I submitted the sbautoupdate.exe file to Grosoft for further analysis and received this reply:
AVG Anti-virus Research Lab has analyzed the file(s) you have sent from your AVG Virus Vault. Below you can find the results for each file. The final verdict on the file is either a correct detection or a false positive detection.

Further information about the verdicts are available at our website: http://www.avg.com/faq-1184

"D:\Program Files\SpywareBlaster\sbautoupdate.exe" - detection is correct
I don't have a paid verson so I am unable to get a response from Javacoolsoftware to confirm whether it is a false positive or a Torjan horse Dropper.Agent.IPC. (and I realize since I don't have the paid version I am not able to use that feature) but I want to find the correct answer from a company representative.

Has someone with a Paid version submitted the problem to Javacoolsoftware?

I am submitting the file to Grosoft for deeper analysis.

Off to get more info from AVG regarding this.

I have been using SpywareBlaster for awhile now and loving it. Today I received message of 4.1 update; so I first disabled all protection, then removed old version via Add/Remove and then started the download of 4.1 from CNet. The first time I did get the download (saving to my desktop); but the file was "corrupt", so I could not get it installed. I read somewhere my security setting might not be letting it download; but not sure what to do there. (I run windows XP with SP2, IE7 and internet security is set at med-high. I am on "dial-up" without access to any other internet connection.)

Can anyone help me get this new SpywareBlaster downloaded and installed?

Hi,

This has unfortunately happened in the past, and is indeed a false positive.

I'll work on contacting the anti-virus companies affected to try to get them to fix it. If anyone using a product that has this false positive could do the same, it would be incredibly helpful.

The legitimate sbautoupdate.exe file is digitally signed by "Javacool Software LLC", and has the following checksums:

MD5: 5D0E5821EB35CDA9C320C1BDF1A4B695
SHA1: 62B09B3503C05A3CC853BB8BDFCC8292FD200E53

Best regards and thanks,
