What is the best free spam filter? I have listed some that I have found and some I have used. If there are others please list them.

These are free spam filters for email clients.

I don't use any spam filter, but I use Gmail and the spam filter in it is DAMN GOOD... very few (I can´t remember the last) FP's, and no junk to the inbox :)

I use Gmail and Hotmail via Windows Live Mail POP3 without spam filter and I get only about 1 spam per day to Hotmail eventhough I have both emails public.

Ever since I use Gmail, I stopped thinking spam is a problem: It just works.

Thunderbird's buit-in spam-filter solution. Not the best and I don't do anything to make it better either, too lazy and not worth the effort, my email-traffic is too small.
My ISP removes most of my spam, the rest is ignored and removed immediately without opening. I have better things to do than reading spam. :)

I don't let spam get to my computer, I use inbox.con, they have the spam filters and black and white lists. This way I can see the spam, sometimes a important email can be deleted from the inbox as spam. I don't open the spam once I determine it is SPAM, I then delete all the spam and trash. Then I download the email with Thunderbird.

If you do your Microsoft Updates...Outlook 2003 and higher has the built in spam filter which receives updates monthly.

For business clients...I've been using Untangle...a *nix based UTM router/firewall...on more and more clients. Excellent spam filtering (as well as tons of other UTM features, virus scanning, etc). On their Exchange mail servers...the IMF component also does SPAM removal, and gets monthly updates.

    So there's a couple of "free" options..which combined...work great.

I used Spam Pal for years until development stopped. Now use Spamihilator with Thunderbird and gmail account. It does an excellent job and handles IMAP as well as pop and also can use SSL.

Interesting how many people are using gmail as a spam filter. Also interesting how about 2/3 of the votes are for a type of spam filter (gmail, mailwasher, Spamihilator) that does not allow the spam to download to the email client.

Gmail IMAP does (which I use via thunderbird).

Good thing with thunderbird is, that you can configure it's spam folder to be the gmail imap spam folder, so the filters learn off each other (along with a little rule to mark all email in the spam folder as spam), which makes for very good spam filtering.

I just use the Junk eMail in Outlook 2007. If the sender is in my contacts or my safelist I get it; otherwise, it goes to the junk E-mail folder.
