This is a old Toshiba Satellite laptop that i am using.
It has XP Professional SP3 installed. It has a 60 GB HDD, but its only one partition, just C: drive. The free space is 40 GB. So, can someone please guide me as to how can i have another drive letter, like D: say with 10 GB or 20 GB space? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

make sure you a good image backup stored on an external drive. I have had 2 incidents where I lost all the data on a harddrive when I try to split it. But I have also had success partitioning an active hard drive, it's just better to plan for the worst. Once a partitioning operation goes bad, it's next to impossible to recover from it.
Also the free gparted is available as a linux livecd and can resize ntfs partitions http://gparted.sourceforge.net/index.php If you don't have any image backup software, use the 15 day demo of easyimage, it's a full trial thats easy to use. Make sure you make a bootcd and store the image on another hard drive or computer (through a LAN connection). http://www.eazsolution.com/en/easyimage.php |

Hello Lebowsky
EASTER here. If you had access to the old version (6) PARAGON Hard Drive Manager on CD, you would be in possession of what i call the greatest time saver i ever found. I still use it to boot up with and it shows what's available on the hard drive and i must say it partitions so darn easy and formats even when another partition is on the same drive. In other words it preps the HD for you to add a partition(s) and then the XP Install Disks asks first where you want to install XP, and also leave the newly formatted file system intact. This might not be what you had in mind but just wanted to pass this along because i routinely split HD's off to at least another "bootable" partition and then you only need to add a line in the boot.ini file on both to boot to both from a single HD. EASTER
