    AVG Anti-Spyware ended at 7.5. No more 8.0 o_O

The new 8.0 line of AVG is released but there is no information on the AVG web site as to the fate of AVG Anti-Spyware. AVG Anti-Spyware seems to reach the end of life. :doubt:

Check the Grisoft FAQ, it says that there will be no separate AV or AS products anymore, AS users are entitled to a free upgrade to AVG AV 8.0.

I had voiced my concern about this during the beta but apparently Grisoft has decided to end the Anti-spyware product with 7.5. I am not very happy about this as AVG AS 7.5 was a good product. But then, with the development of a new unified engine, I doubt they could separate the databases to create an AS-only product.

Thanks Firecat for the tip!!! :thumb: :thumb:

I can now find it in the FAQ section:

As my subscription doesn't end until December, I take it I can be assured of full tech support and updates until then?

It figures now that AVG AS has been running smoothly they decide to go suite!:thumbd:

Like stapp mentions,do we still get updates for 7.5?

Do we HAVE to upgrade to 8.0?

Most of us already have another AV program we're running and want to keep AVG AS as a separate program.

    Bring back ewido 3.5!:thumb:

also see my post in AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.1.43 released!
I have all the info for the new 8.0 and it should answer some of your questions.
I am a reseller for AVG and have been beta testing 8.0 from conception.

I use a dedicated Anti Virus and have no desire
to use AVG 8.0, or the AVG 8.0 suite, what I do
have though is a worthless Ewido lifetime license,
and a AVG AS license which expires end of 2009
which will be pretty much useless to by the end
    of this year, thanks AVG.

no it will not be useless if you upgrade. The upgrade process is free, unless you run another antivirus program, then you have to make the decision on which one to keep

Well, you could just use AVG 8 on-demand. Surely, you paid for a real-time scanner and automatic updates, but anti-trojans are slowly dying.

I don't know (yet), but I think that you can do a custom install.
    See here
I'm too only interested in the malware scanning engine. I don't use real-time AVs, nor I need firewall, antispam, webshield and rootkit scanner.

AVG 8.0 will be supported at least for another 8 months IMO. Usually popular products are given a one or two month extension for the support period. The AVG website will be updated with information for AVG 7.5's end-of-life when the time approaches.

But I guess this means the end of the Ewido support forums, and permanent removal of Ewido from the market....:(

    No more ewido....:'(

I don't want the suite. It's my computer and I prefer layers, I like to see which antivirus works with what firewall etc.
With a suite, if there's a problem, well your hands are tied a bit. As I said, it's my computer, and I prefer to make my own choice and not have it suggested that the suite is the best option, so upgrade now.

    So now, what next?

Is there a similar app which causes so few conflicts?

Do we need a similar app?

your avg 7.5 will be supported only to the end of this year.
As for AVG 8.0 since it comes with antivirus and antispyware you will have to make a choice. Uninstall the antivirus program that you have or loose your license for avg antispyware now.

If you want a seperate antispyware program then I suggest you try Superantispyware Pro which is another excellent program. 4.0 will be coming out in a few days and I have been beta testing it since its conception and it works great. For those of you who will upgrade to 8.0 you should get superantispyware free version as a on demand scanner.

Be very careful with the webshield part of AVG 8.0. If you find web surfing becomes very slow, turn it off. As a beta tester almost all of us found this problem and after turning it off, web surfing improved. Also if you use windows live messenger it had a conflict with it, I hope the released version they fixed the conflict but I have not installed it as of yet to see.

I am waiting for it to pop up and announce there is a new version from my program so i can explain how to upgrade to my clients when it does it this way.

Much like Stapp I to prefer a layered approach,
and used AVGAS strictly as a occasional ondemand
scanner, and like Firecat I had hoped that AVGAS
would be maintained as a separate product.

I will give AVG 8.0 a try on my computer tomorrow,
and if it can be installed as a ondemand scanner, and
does not cause any conflicts I may keep it, and if it
can not be well off my computer it goes.

No suites for me. Goodbye AVG 7.5, I hardly knew ye. :'(

Seems everything is going to suites now. I guess the companies figure if users like one of their programs they will move to the suites when they come out and drop the other softwares they ran from competitors. This may be true for some people but I think many people won't want to give up the other softwares they like and move to a suite. I liked AVGAS 7.5 but not AVG antivirus. I will stick with my preferred AV, AS, FW, etc and say so long to AVGAS.

Ok quick follow up, I uninstalled AVGAS 7.5 downloaded
trial of AVG 8.0, and at install the program recognizes
another AV is installed, recommends uninstall, I chose
skip, than you can do custom install, uncheck webshield,
completes installation, no reboot requested, than updates,
you can disable real time protection however even when
set to manual AVGAV, AVGAS, AVGRootkit continue to
load and run just with real time protection disabled.

I do not see any option to just use this program as a
secondary or a on demand scanner.

I really do not know how great the changes are to AVG 8.0
or their suite guess time will tell but at this point I am not
willing to change my existing AV to AVG 8.0 just to keep
my already valid license for AVGAS.

I guess it was only a matter of time. I also prefer the layered approach like a lot of others here and I have no desire to go for the "suite route". Im still using Ewido 4.0 (on demand) and will continue to do so as long as I can get definition updates for it. :'(

EDIT: Maybe the Windows Live One Care proggy knew something we didnt! ;)
