Looking for a good ( preferably free )

You may want to look at this thread.

AxCrypt is very good and an update is on the way. The only thing I've noticed with it, and Vista, is that it may not install properly if not installed from the same drive that contains Vista (usually C).

It all depends on your requirements (i.e., threat model, environmental constraints, what you're wanting to encrypt, et cetera). Assuming you are using Windows Vista Enterprise or Windows Vista Ultimate, will BitLocker work for you?

Quoting myself from this post of mine:

The original, unedited draft, entitled, "On Shifting 'Windows' and 'Security' from Less Antonymous to More Synonymous," can be found here, in HTML and PDF formats. It features some great commentary by Phil Zimmermann.

If not that, there are PGP Corporation's offerings, such as PGP Whole Disk Encryption and PGP Desktop Home, both of which are compatible with all 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista.

TrueCrypt for folders, AxCrypt for files. I use AxCrypt and it works great, since its new version, it does not crash anymore.

Naturally, I will recommend TrueCrypt since it offers good encryption on Vista with only limited problems reported by users. However, version 5.0 is coming soon, and you should check the website frequently for that next version.
