Would it not be good to protect configuration files?

 

Now that I'm in vacation from the Finnish army, must reply to something.

Dr.Web is also quickly tweakable from the drweb.ini file that is located in DrWeb folder, there are also few extra options that are undocumented or can not be configured from GUI menus.

 

is that normal for an av? Or is drWeb an exception? Good luck in the army!

 

I'd say it's not normal for a modern av but anchient way to have a "menu" for a program. It's probably a remnant from the 90's, and Dr.Web has been there since 92. I appreciate that and nothing is more faster and simpler than a simple Yes/No or True/False .ini. Dr.Web is oldschool, and I like it.

but its mainly to enable a 'delete' button on spiderguard for archives.

but if you aint scanning for archives on spiderguard, this makes it pointless.

but as you rightly said, it can be a quicker way to check/change all settings regarding Drweb. (Vista users need to run as Administrator to save the settings)

my settings posted, are the optimal ones, without losing any protection.

Well, I'd say that those settings are optimal for you, someone else might find some other configuration better for him/herself.. The .ini isn't pointless because it's the core of your settings and if you change something from GUI it basically makes the change to the ini. For people who like to get straight to business and know something about these settings, tweak the ini. From the GUI, you are only changing the ini.

but i think the majority of users will need to know how to do it via the GUI.

plus, i actually prefer the gui approach, it might not be as quick, but its more pleasing on the eyes

 

obviously, when i trialled DrWeb, the first thing i looked into was the GUI!

I switched back to Dr. Web just now. Avira offers good detection, but I like Dr. Web's spam filter as opposed to Avira's. My ISP stops most spam, but some (more than I would like) gets through. Dr. Web's spam engine is the best I have tested-and we have tested them all.

It appears there are some good things in the works for Dr. Web- let's hope so.
