Testing software is the exact purpose of virtual machines.
Being a freeware, VirtualBox is an excellent VMware alternative. Both support dual processors, and (if I am not mistaken) VB has a feature similar to VMware's "snapshots". VirtualBox can also play VMware images (machines). I am not using VB at the moment, for the one sole reason - I have uninstalled VB twice, and every time it leaves behind a "hidden device" driver installed. I had to uninstall that manually both times. Haven't tried the latest version of VB, so that could be polished by now. Cheers,
