Emails disappear on OE - Won't download?

Outlook Express, WinXP SP2. It seems that some of my emails don't download. What I get is a blank envelope icon and no message header and no message. The download from the earthlink.net server seems to "lock up" about 3/4 of the way through. I can retrieve the messages at earthlink since they haven't yet downloaded. I don't know if this involves EMail Protection or Anti-Spam protection. Anyone else having this problem? Suggestions?
