Default ekrn.exe holding connections?

It looks like ekrn.exe is holding TCP connections, even long after application that started it is closed. Still some in connected state (for example, firefox connections stay open for some time after firefox is closed). Intentional, or just resource leak? XP SP2/ESS 3.0.414.0
