Wubi???

Has anyone tried Wubi, linux with a Windows-installer I read about it here... http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Ubuntu-from-Windows-in-3-Steps-Without-Using-a-CD-61304.shtml ...and it seems like Ubuntu for dummies, which may convince me to "take the plunge".

Nice find. I am also really intrested about this. Sounds like good way to start learning Linux. This way i could also "take the plunge".

 

"If it sounds to good to be true..." is what made me ask about this! It installs within Windows, but I didn't think Windows and Linux "spoke the same language". Dual-boot Win\Ubuntu with no partitioning

 

You are right it sounds too good to be true. I am at work today so i cant even try it. I hope someone has come across it and can expalin how it works.

 

Wubi works very well here. It creates a dual boot so when you start your pc let you chose what OS to boot (XP or Ubuntu in my case) ; the install process takes about one hour and everything is very easy to setup and dummy friendly. If you don't like Ubuntu just go to add remove programs panel under Windows and remove Wubi, very simple.

 

WOW!!! That's smaller than my XP installation!!! Okay, this dummy is gonna take the plunge later today, maybe. I swore off any new dLo's for a while, but dual-boot XP/Ubuntu!!!

 

Question-

From Softpedia:

"the installation requires a minimum of 4GB. This space is mostly used by the virtual hard disk file"

I see that I have about 50 GB free on my C drive but only 1.96 GB of available Virtual Memory and about 455 MB of physical memory available. Is this enough to install Wubi?

One hour and Wubi is installed and updated!!! In one word...SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!

 

Any tips or tricks to know once it is installed? Is there anymore essential software that needs to be added?

CNET - "One word of caution: remember the user name and password you enter into Wubi before installation .... you'll need it once Ubuntu is installed, otherwise you'll be locked out." Beside's this, lose the win mentality and enjoy your new found freedom.

I'd be happy just getting the keyboard in sync, like the at-button being used with shift+2

 

Make sure you install all the necessary codecs to play restricted media formats

Guys, I took the plunge and installed! It's running like a dream. A couple of questions.
I'm running behind a router so it's not an immediate concern but what about a firewall? Is there an inbuilt firewall?
What about AV protection or is that an anachronism?

Here's another way to try out Ubuntu.

MS Virtual PC 2007 - free

New virtual drive - 10 gig preferably on another partition besides C.

File system - other.

Half available ram allocated

Install Ubuntu using safe graphics mode - and Bob's ya uncle.

I've set up a dual boot, but haven't booted windows in a week... The only reason for me to keep my windows partition for now seems to be that my printer won't work in Ubuntu

 

I'm keeping windows for the kids, they don't even know that I've got ubuntu...shhhhhhh!!!
