Wow! This seems to me to be a "head in the clouds, no idea in the world what is really going on" kind of decision.
I help lots of folks with their PC and the average PC user wants a standalone email client. They come from an Outlook Express background. They don't like and seem to be confused by web mail interfaces. Guess this means the Mozilla Foundation is surrendering to Windows Mail in Vista because this won't find a new home for T-Bird. It will kill it... |

As long as TB keeps on working I will keep on using it. Unless of course it becomes a major hazard\security liability.

Such a shame... I absolutely love Thunderbird and I hate Outlook...

That is very intresting move. Hopefully it doesnt mean "death" for Thunderbird. Maybe in the long run it will be good for Thunderbird..who knows!

I didn't read the full story you linked to, so I don't know when this is supposed to become effective. (Hopefully not until they've found a good new home for TBird, if they can.)
But it's probably safe to assume that "check for updates" will be useless for an indefinite length of time. Wonder what this will do for (or to) the long-awaited Mozilla-based replacement for Eudora?

As with many free apps. many times they are bought out by larger companies. Good, bad? Time will tell. Or perhaps TB will simply pass into obscurity as so many other pieces of software have.
