Default Quit Antivir 4 Avast, have question

Dear members,

Although Antivir scores higher in comparatives testing, specially for worms, backdoors and trojans than Avast, I was fed up with the long and lacking virus definitions update.

I have switched to Avast and have a queston on the VRDB protection mechanismen. According to the help Vrius Recorvery Data Base is a sort of last life line when cleaning fails. It keeps three version of the files.

- What is the scope of the data base (critical systems files only or all)?
- How does it work (does it keep actual copies, where or is it based on
some sort of integrity counting to re-calculate the original values of
the infected parts)?

Regards Kees

VRDB storage scope is limited to executable files (EXE, COM, CMD etc) and it doesn't store complete files, just parts of them and integrity info (whats stored exactly knows only ALWIL team). Typical VRDB database size is usually around 15-20MB in size. It's suppose to be fairly efficient for older file infectors but i'm not sure if it fares too well to current file infectors (like Win32olip for example).

I switched from AntiVir PE Classic to Avast Home for the same reason.
I have been very happy with how Avast handles updates.

Shame that the poor update servers and that nag screen ruin an otherwise fine free product. I use Avast for similar reasons myself and am totally satisfied as well..

Thx,

Avast looks a nice complete free AV. Because it scans a lot of threatgates, I have set theregular shield only to check at writes (the performance option as Avast mentiones this).

So on the PC of my wife now is running Avast free, A2 IDS (paid), DefenseWall (paid).

I decided to give AOL's Active Virus Shield (Kapersky free with less options) a try on my son's PC, so he is running AVS free, CyberHawk Pro, GeSWall Pro.

Thansk for the info. I know Avast will stay on my wife's computer, see how obtainable the updates of AVS are in the next week.

I have Avast for Linux. Like it. But the GUI is awful. And the updates take forever.

Totally opposite of my experience with Avast for Windows.

Weird huh?

I haven't tried all the Linux AV's but yes they are not the same looks wise, they don't have incremental updates.

I also had big update problem with AntiVir, I use Avast in both Windows and Linux.
