    Hardware:
HP StorageWorks DAT72 USB External Tape Drive

    Software:
Acronis True Image 9.1 for Windows Servers (w/ Universal Restore) build 3920

I am writing this post to formally request that Acronis re-examine its tape drive routines for the backup procedures. While I understand that 'disk-imaging' is ideally done on a disk-to-disk level, the viability of Acronis to function on a tape drive is desperately needed.

I began this restore job at 9:32 PM on June 21st, 2007 and as of 10:03 PM June 22nd, 2007 the job is at 39% completion status.

It took nearly 12 hours for Acronis to successfully read the tape archive. Before I could even click on "Proceed" nearly 13 hours had passed.

The size of the backup tape is roughly 60GB of data (which most of the data is empty space on the partition). The process of re-sizing the partitions warned me that it would be MUCH slower. I fail to see how this process could be ANY slower.

The drive is connected and operating at USB2.0 as verified by my system and the tape diagnostics. The computer is a brand new 2.66 Core 2 Duo machine with 2 GB of RAM. The disk drives are Sata-II compliant (in AHCI mode on the motherboard) and are not the problem.

Could anyone from the community or Acronis confirm that the process of restoring data requires the backup software to "catalogue" or somehow do an intensive read process before beginning? This has taken way too much time and is in desperate need of a complete re-write how data is stored on the tape.

Well here is the problem with lengthy restores like this. After 30+ hours, the Universal Restore started up but at about 30% the application crashed and I got an error. The ENTIRE 30+ hours was wasted and the server is STILL down.

    Hello jeremyotten,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Corporate Disk Backup Software.

We are sorry for the delayed response.

Please notice that the reason of slow restoration of separate files/folders from an image on tape has already been explained in this thread.

    Thank you.

    Hello signetring,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Server Disk Backup Software.

We are sorry for the delayed response.

Please notice that resizing the partition during the restore from a tape willl require some changes in file table structure, and will be slower for same reasons as restoration of separate files from a tape (see link in my previous post).

Please notice that it is strongly recommended to use Acronis Universal Restore from Acronis Bootable Rescue Media. Please create Acronis Bootable Rescue Media with the latest build (3920) of both Acronis True Image 9.1 Server for Windows and Acronis Universal Restore. Then boot the target computer with the media and perform the restore operation.

If the issue persists, please collect some information to let us investigate it thoroughly:

Please create Acronis Report and Linux system information (sysinfo.txt) as it is described in Acronis Help Post on the destination computer. Please keep drives in question connected and powered on during the creation process.

Please clarify, does the image contain a whole drive or only a partition? What operating system is there in the image? What build and version of Acronis True Image were used to create the image?

Please also create a screenshot (if possible) or a photo of the error message you quoted.

Then submit a request for technical support. Attach all the collected files and information to your request along with the step-by-step description of the actions taken before the problem appears and the link to this thread. We will investigate the problem and try to provide you with a solution.

    Thank you.
