RegSeeker !! Registry crash

Greetings. Does anyone have an idea how one can edit and merge registry items into a registry file that is not currently installed? The non-working registry file (and Windows for that matter) is on a HDD and this HDD is now the secondary drive on some other computer just for the purposes of trying to repair the registry in question.

Computer crashed after an over-zealous session using RegSeeker. (Yes - backups were made but they cannot be installed because this windows install has a corrupt C:\Windows\System32\Config\system registry file and cannot start. The computer cannot even get to the Command Prompt in Safe Mode or even in Safe Mode for that matter. There was no backup disk made and no Windows Disk. It is the Media Center Edition but they do have an XP Pro disk. The backup file from RegSeeker is in the .reg format.

Yes, thank you. The solution has nearly arrived. Now to figure out how to merge a .reg file with 1264 entries! The entries are from all over the registry. What was being attemtped was to get rid of norton on someone's computer. Norton did not want to go silently (via add/delete programmes)! The backup files from RegSeeker look like this - 1264clean-5-2-2007-9.11-17PM.reg In this file there are about 1264 items!!!

 

I thought the " add/remove " would lose Norton too Q. - how unfortunate

that you followed the same path - because we don't have crystal balls

(well I don't anyway) how could we possibly know that one requires

a special tool to remove that crap.

Once you merge the few (1264 was it) files back into the reg.

many of them will still be Norton - you need to use the,

" Norton Removal Tool " - It won't be necessary to reinstall Norton to do it,

just install and run it once or twice - then restart the machine - open Regseeker's Find in Registry - type in Norton - delete any of Norton's files still showing. Here's the tool,

Thank you very much Micro. If only the party would have made inquiries we would have recommended NOD32 for sure and hence no need to uninstall! Now we find one last problem - how to re-integrate the backed-up .reg files into the offline Registry. The "Import/Export Hive" function of Regedit is almost what we need but not quite.

Fix a Registry on a dead system.

 

Use the restore backup command of Eusing Registry Cleaner. Locate the folder where you saved the backup .reg files then press the restore button of Eusing. It is a freeware. I had the same problem and Eusing fixed it. You can uninstall Eusing after that. Hope this helped you!

Sorry for the late post. The computer was fully restored using a boot disk to copy a working reg file back into place (as best as can be remembered).

The lesson is - if one is attempting to rid a computer of the next worse thing than Coolsearch - Norton - then by all means use the Norton removal tool first.

On another conputer someone we know used the Norton removal tool first in safe mode but this was not sufficient. What was needed was guided removal of additional Norton/Symantec items from the Registry.
