Default k-lite mega codec pack bsod help

I downloaded the k-lite mega codec pack after hearing a lot of good things about it. I am not very experienced with media players but after downloading I tried to play a cdr but got a bsod. I rebooted and tried again and this time everything went fine. Now I see that the version I dwnloaded was 1.71 as opposed to the newest version of 2.01.

Based on the prior bsod should I look elsewhere for a new audio/video player? Or try the 2.01 version of k-lite mcp?

I have saw a few other players that look intriguing, although not as comprehensive as k-lite's. Those include GOM player, jetaudio and zoom player. Any suggestions?

FWIW- I am more concerned with playing videos than audio.

Hell,
You could use the standard klite pack, which has less codecs, but it has 99.99% of all you will need + less likely chance of an incompatibility problem.

if u dont have anything against codec (packs), id suggest Vista Codec Pack and Media Player Classic.

if you prefer players with builtin codecs then try gom player or vlc player.

Try one of these solutions. They're ordered from worst to best IMHO.
- Player w/ built-in codecs: GOM Player
- Codec pack: CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack. It also has two media players: Zoom Player and Media Player Classic.
- Manual installation of codecs: Inmatrix's Media Guide. This guide, coupled with Zoom Player, will give you the best results IMHO.

OK. I think I have a good number to work with and whittle down. This may sound like a pretty strange/dumb question, but how do I make one of these new players my default player on Windows XP? Or is this possible?

I have noticed that if I play a dvd/cd I can pretty much determine which player I want to use. But if I am on a web site and want to watch a video (country music video. btw) Microsoft's WMP 10 wants installed and there seems no way to play online content with another player besides WMP. I previously uninstalled WMP 11 and it just rolled back to WMP 10.

So are any of the alternative players mentioned in this thread able to be a default player for online content/videos? As far as that goes, which are able to be default players in XP and is there some trick to making that happen?

Thanks

Most players let you select what files you want them to play. Look through the player's options or preferences and look for file types or file associations.

VLC has a browser plugin though ive read it conflicts with the WMP plugin.

One other thing you can try for Firefox, is the MediaPlayerConnectivity extension. Its supposed to allow you to open your media player to view the online content.
