Default Is Windows Defender Any Good?

Simple question, is WD worth having as a back up resident anti-spyware component? Have detection rates improved lately? Last time I tried it, it crashed 15 minutes after each startup, so I binned it. Any opinions valued.

Sorry, realised I've posted this in the wrong section.
